With the 2010 South Africa World Cup still in its opening stages, there have already been a number of controversial refereeing decisions that have had an unwanted impact for some of the players and teams in the competition.

Indeed, World Cup controversy isn't new to this year's tournament, with many claiming that poor refereeing decisions in previous tournaments have ultimately changed what should have been the true outcome.

So, what is the answer? It's fair to say that the modern era of refereeing was probably established by English public school football games, notably Eton football in 1845. A match report from Rochdale in 1842 shows their use in a football game between the Bodyguardsclub and the Fearnought Club. The game has come far from its humble beginnings with a world wide audience of hundreds of millions and the technology needed to broadcast it to all corners of the globe.

No one can claim that a referee's job is an easy one, as they strive to be the all seeing and knowing eyes of the match. Even with other officials such as Linesmen, it's a difficult thing to cover all angles on a pitch that measures around 105m (115yd) by 68m (74yd). That's an area of over 7,000 meters or 8,500 yards with 22 constantly moving people to monitor.

Although a part of British football's rich tradition, the finality of the referee's decision has for many years been called in to question. With the introduction of modern visual aids and the ability to run instant playbacks, fans and people within the game are now asking for a change in the way refereeing decisions are made.

At other sporting events, more notably Rugby, camera evidence is common place and can, within a matter of seconds, confirm or deny a referees suspicions on what may or may not have happened on the field of play.

One thing is certain - all the while the decision is left to one man and his ability to interpret the unfolding situations around him, this World Cup as with previous tournaments will not only be remembered for the overall winner, but also those decisions, good and bad, that shaped the outcome of the 2010 tournament.
