Should Troops Openly Criticize Their Commander In Chief?

Should Troops Openly Criticize Their Commander in Chief

?

As a former soldier who served his country for a number of years I am beginning to notice a recent trend which is very disturbing to me. There seems to be mounting incidences of troops from all branches of service who have no problem with openly criticizing their commander in chief. Now I have a major problem with this. Before I begin let me explain something. I am not partial to this commander in chief as I was not partial to the last one. The thing is that no matter what you think of the man you have to respect the office. Let us remember that our commander in chief does not function in a vacuum. Do your unit commanders just make whatever decisions that they want to regardless of the advice that they get from the NCO.s in your unit? Do your NCOs criticize your commander to you? Would you allow your subordinates to openly question your decisions?

These are things that we should think about before we begin to criticize our leadership. I know that in some countries you wouldnt dare speak your opinion out loud. Now your answer to this may be that this is a free country and you have freedom of speech, and I agree, but dont dish out more than you can take. Your right of free speech goes only as far as it can without impinging on someone elses rights. Does your free speech hurt the order, discipline, and morale of your unit? If it calls the commander in chief in question it does because it destroys unit cohesion and undermines his authority.

One thing that I really used to like about the Army is that you never heard senior NCOs criticize their commander even if he were not a good commander. They simply followed lawful orders, talked to him if he would listen, and worked their way around bad decisions, but you never heard them question him openly. As far as I am concerned this is a part of the professionalism that all soldiers, marines, sailors, or airmen should display.

I dont even see any room for debate. If you say that we live in a democracy then I will tell you that the military is not a democracy. It cant be because of the job that it is responsible for. When you voluntarily signed on to defend your country you gave up most of your rights. You are not an individual any more. You are one small part of an organization which operates as one system. It cant operate effectively if a part of it wants to move in a different direction.

Personally I listened to a lot of complaints about our last commander in chief and I seem to hear nothing but complaints about this one. I dont know either of those individuals so I dont have an opinion yet. All I know is what I have heard someone else say and personally I dont know how much of it is right or how much of it is wrong.

Now you dont obey unlawful orders but the fact that you may not like something or it makes no sense to you does not make it unlawful. It just means that you dont like it so maybe you are the one with the problem.

I once had a marine friend who told me that the attitude of the Corps was this; Even if we feel that our Commander has not made the best decision we will execute it so well that we will make it work. What happened to that attitude? Has the military changed that much in recent years? Military Ring Express
