Should We Do Health and Safety?
What would you be thinking if a bear had eaten your ancestor? It's early morning in 1409, somewhere in Latvia. Young Gustav is getting prepared to finish ploughing his field. He finds his obedient old horse mauled to death and partially eaten, as he wants to strap it into its harness. As he observes his old friend he can see the obvious signs of a bear.
Right as he sets off to sound the alarm he notices as massive shady brown shape rising out of the mist. He trips and falls as he sets of to escape the situation. Not nearly quick enough - Its too late! Gustav now accompanies his horse as bear droppings somewhere in the enarby forest. The problem now is that all the people that he was destined to create will now never exist. And while they will not know it, Gustav will be a hole burnt in the fabric of his potential descendants; those he will not be alive to create. So what was all that about?
The story I am trying to tell is. Every one of us that stands successful in his or her life, is only alive because of the existence of our direct ancestors who did not get killed and could give life to the next person in line. Now or 1409, the result has got the same output - every year, time after time people die like a silent unacknowledged disaster. So then what is the connection and relevance to health and safety. In a very recent assessment study on New Zealand's health and safety statistics, it shows just how terribly we take care of ourselves and colleagues at work. I read this from a recent Leadership Forum attended by the PM."The worplace accidents toll in New Zealand is very high compared to similar countries. An amount of $16 billion is spent each year on social and economic costs".Workplace injuries kill about 100 people a year, and more than 700 people die prematurely (so read, 800) each year from work-related illness or disease; more than 200,000 people a year require an ACC claim from being seriously harmed in New Zealand workplaces' (that's 1.75 times the population of Dunedin every year!So what is it that we are doing wrong. Could you imagine what we could have done with $16 billion dollars last year?
We could really lower the tax rate instead of just fiddling with it; invest it in KiwiSaver; build two new hospitals a year, instead of losing services! Half a dozen schools could have been built. Just about anything that you can think of like cheaper university fees and better roads. All because we halved the expenditures that go on in the workplace. Most of these mishaps and accidents could have been prevented!Well, the sad fact of the matter is that we CAN achieve this. It's actually easier than we think, we just have to focus on the benefits. Contrary to popular folk lore, health and safety is NOT the complicated, tedious, waste of time that it's made out to be. Its actually the core of a successful and profitable business. And isn't that what a business is meant to be? After all, injured people don't produce much; and corpses can't produce descendents!
