Should We Eat All Our Fruits And Vegies?

Fruits and vegetables might help smokers quit

Fruits and vegetables might help smokers quit. A study published in Nicotine and Tobacco Research surveyed 1,000 adult smokers on their smoking and eating habits. Fourteen months later the participants reported how much they'd smoked in the past month. Smokers who ate the most fruits and vegetables were 3 times likelier to be smoke-free for 30 days than smokers who ate the least or they smoked fewer cigarettes daily. Maybe the fiber in fruits and vegetables makes smokers feel fuller and thus less likely to smoke, maybe they worsen the taste of cigarettes or maybe they are Mother Nature's "smoke alarms".

Apples may fight obesity. In a study published in PLoS ONE, some participants ate a high-fat diet for several weeks that included ursolic acid - found in apple peels. Although they ate more food than participants who ate the same diet without the chemical and although they didn't exercise more, the ursolic acid participants gained less weight. This was attributed to ursolic acid increasing muscle mass, which burns more calories and increasing brown fat, which has been linked to lower obesity levels. Although ursolic acid has only been tested on mice as of June 2012, avoid eating cheese with your apples.

Apple pies are bought the most - followed by pumpkin, cherry, blueberry and Dutch apple. This fact is from Fresh Facts, which also says mini, sliced and half pies made up 24% of pies purchased. According to the Nielson Perishables Group, 26% of households bought a fresh pie in 2011; and according to Restaurant News, pies are challenging cupcakes as the trendiest dessert. However, the author of "What's Cooking, America?" says the first pies were meat pies and were called "coffins" - meaning box. They became known as pies because magpies were the primary filling - giving new meaning to "pie in the sky".

Unfortunately, however, the Environmental Working Group reported apples and celery have the highest pesticide residue. The other ten types of produce included in the group's 2012 "Dirty Dozen" (in descending order of contamination) are: sweet bell peppers, peaches, strawberries, imported nectarines, grapes, spinach, lettuce, cucumbers, domestic blueberries and potatoes - with cucumbers replacing kale/collard greens. The Dirty Dozen report is based on pesticide residue data collected by the Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration, which tested samples after they had been washed or peeled. However, by buying organic produce you can tell pesticides to "bug off".
