Should You Be Using A Moisturizer With Sunscreen?
As we are all now, quite reasonably, protecting ourselves from skin cancer it would
seem obvious that we should be using a moisturiser with sunscreen.
After all if we are applying a moisturiser every morning why not have an SPF factor included in it?
I'm here to tell you that is not a good idea. I'll explain why.
Firstly let me say that protecting your skin from sunburn is one of the most important things you can do. Not only can it save you from dying from skin cancer it is also one of the single most important things you can do to slow down the visible effects of age.
When your skin is burned by the ultraviolet rays of the sun it is gradually being damaged, at some point beyond repair. Your skin cells are being broken down and over time the effects can be ravaging on your face.
The technical name for this is photoaging, and it is one of the single biggest causes, and to some women the biggest cause, of skin degradation, such as the formation of wrinkles, lines and discolouration.
This would seem to be an argument for buying a moisturizer with sunscreen added. But it fails to consider several important factors.
Sunscreens, although they may work effectively to a degree, are not foolproof. It is foolish to assume that if you have applied an SPF moisturiser in the morning that you will have much protection during the day, particularly during the afternoon.
If you do you may well be disappointed, and sunburned.
Not only that but the sun protection effect is often achieved by the use of various chemicals, some of which may not be so good for our health.
If you apply them occasionally, only in summer when needed, and only during the time of the day when needed, and only if you are going out in the sun, chances are they are unlikely to cause any health problems as they will be applied infrequently.
Apply them every day of the year, via a sunscreen moisturiser, and you're wearing chemicals 365 days of the year, 350 of which you may not need to.
By all means protect yourself from the sun. But only do so when absolutely necessary, preferably do so by wearing a hat and long sleeved shirt, and wear a sunscreen when all else fails.
But using a moisturiser with sunscreen is potentially risky for a number of reasons. Those are the negatives.
