Should You Bet On Double Risers?

Should You Bet On Double Risers?

Should You Bet On Double Risers?

We've all heard of double droppers - dogs that drop down a grade and then another grade. They're often good bets, because they face dogs who aren't as competitive with them as the dogs in the higher grades are. Of course, whether to play them or not depends on why they're dropping.

If they're just stale or having a few off-races, they're good bets. But if they're injured, going out of form or just not up to the grades they were in before they dropped down, you should give them a miss. But what about double risers? And what ARE double risers anyway?

They're dogs who move up a grade by winning and then win again, right away, and move up another grade. Sometimes, this happens when a young dog wins in M and then in J and moves right up to D or C, depending on the track it's running at. Sometimes, dogs do this and then lose their next race, because they're in over their heads. They may win within a few races, but when they first hit the higher grade, they're outclassed.

A lot of people won't bet one of these dogs, because they think that dogs moving up are bad bets. This isn't necessarily true. If the dog was good enough to win in the two grades beneath it, one time right after another, there's always a chance that it will come right back and win three times in a row.

Sure, chances of this happening get slimmer as the dog moves up through the grades, but it does happen. Sometimes, winning a race gives the dog a boost and it performs better than it has before. Dogs are just like people. They're more likely to succeed after a successful attempt at doing something than after they've failed.

So, while you still have to handicap, and while it's still true that moving up is harder than moving down, don't automatically leave these double risers out of your exotic wagers. They may not win, but they may be in the quiniela or trifecta.
