YouTube, wikis, social-networking, podcasts, and other internet interactions have changed the way we communicate. This includes everything from daily conversations to mail to business planning. Blogging a resume is current and efficient. It lets potential employers know you are up to date with the latest trends and technology.

Do Recruiters Look At Blogs?

Many recruiters for well-known corporations search through blog rolls specifically for resumes. In many fields blogging is an important aspect of the job. One recruiter stated that she recently hired a college graduate based on his blog. He did not have a resume - this recruiter feels blogs outshine resumes in every way.


Why are recruiters turning to blogs? A resume is a lifeless piece of paper. A blog has personality plus. A recruiter can scroll through a blog and get a real feel for a person. What are their likes and dislikes, hobbies, and information from their writing style?

More Than a Bullet List

One blogger suggested it would be nice to have more than a bullet list of career high points when making the decision to hire someone. The resume blog allows recruiters to get a well-rounded picture.

Recruiters say that anyone can follow a standard form and write a professional resume. However, a blog will show a person's intelligence. How do they think? What are they passionate about? In today's competitive job market these factors are highly important.

Not having a blog can be a black mark. As more and more job seekers create blogs recruiters will begin to question why a candidate does not have a blog. They may think the job seeker cannot communicate very well, is not up to date with current trends, or has nothing to say - all of which reflect negatively.

Blogs do allow for self-expression so it is important to edit. Communication must be professional. Slang and offensive language will not be overlooked and will most likely be a reason for being passed over. Grammar and spelling mistakes are the same. Presenting yourself in the cyber world is as important as presenting yourself at an interview.

Not Everyone Agrees

Not all recruiters agree that blogs are the next best thing. Some recruiters point to other forms of media as being more acceptable than a blog. A podcast gives a recruiter a chance to see and hear the job candidate. In addition, resumes on social network sites are growing in number.

Blogs may not work in every field. For hi-tech and management jobs a blog will be noticed. However, some professions probably have not heard of a blog. Job seekers can create both a resume and a blog, doubling their chances for success.


Blogs can go too far. One well-meaning blogger discussed his work on a recent project with a recruiter. Unbeknownst to him, he was violating company policy by discussing the project. As resume blogging becomes more popular companies are enforcing strict rules about not discussing work details online.

Maintain

The most effective piece of advice for a blogger is to keep it current. Maintain your blog. It can be embarrassing if a recruiter questions something that is outdated or no longer applies. Experts urge bloggers to post weekly to let recruiters know they are really interested in the job seeking process.
