Should You Build An App? Mistakes To Avoid
Building our App, Spoon and the Moon, was a wild ride! Is it possible for novice App
builders to jump into the tablet market? Yes, even when you are not particularly computer savvy. When Wickedly Sisters (Marie Davis and Margaret Hultzee) told colleagues the plans we made to make our novel into an innovative App for the iPad, and in the process help construct a completely new art form, they wished us good luck, but also LOL!
Sure, weve accumulated plenty of creative, professional experience working as freelancers for over twenty years. However, an iPad App, we were destined to make all sorts of mistakes. New projects have a way of teaching, and with this App project, we learned a few biggies.
Heres how our adventure began: Right away, we went to one of the best-known local media companies in our city and convinced them to collaborate with us. We would deliver the art, music and story. They would program the animations and build the App. With a little haggling, they agreed to accept some cash and an additional percentage of the sales. All of it was a big risk teetering on the edge of a precipice, but we pulled up our big girl panties and jumped. It was the right decision.
Mistake number onewe did not ask our entertainment attorney to put a specific deadline into our contract. Yep, you guessed it! The company bumped our App project several times, and it became a real nail biter if we would even release the project in 2011. On the good side, we were very impressed with the results, even if it took much longer than expected.
Cash-strapped, we turned to some of our talented friends as a source of less-expensive help on other App details such as music, marketing and IT services. Although the general business sentiment is not to work with friends, we found working with them to be a pleasant experience -- except for the two who said they could handle our social media. From the start, we were skeptical of their abilities social media was not their field of expertise. After several long, unproductive meetings, we parted ways in a tactful email. The whole experience cost us time and money. We learned it is okay to hire friends, but make certain they have professional experience in the field that you need help. Moreover, friends or not, everyone signed a contract.
Do you remember those doubting colleagues? Two months later when we showed them the first App build those initial doubts and snickers became unsavory snacks! Yes, they were very impressed and one of our even joked, You both have gone from carving on stone tablets right into the 21st century, in just a few weeks! This time we laughed.
Making our App, weve made other mistakes and conversely, much of what we accomplished was spot on. Stayed tuned for our upcoming articles, topic will include hiring musicians, animations, divvying up profits, and the agonies of finishing a huge project, meeting Apples demands, and marketing mishaps. Along the way, well also be happy to turn you on to some fantastic professionals who have worked to make our dream, Spoon and the Moon, a reality. Please email us if this article helped you, we really want to hear about your experiences as entrepreneurs. spoonandthemoon@yahoo.com If you would like to learn more about our iPad App, you can find more information at www.spoon-and-the-moon.com .
