Should You Buy No-contract Cell Phones?

No-contract cell phones are the latest trend in the mobile industry

. Most popular networks are offering them now, unlike earlier, when you had to sign a two year contract to buy a smart phone. However, the flip side to this is, unlocked phones (as they are called), are relatively more expensive than contract cell phones. That really puts a question mark over whether you should go for unlocked phones or stick to contractual agreements only. Lets take a look at both sides of the coin:

Cost

While No Contract Cell Phones are more expensive that their contract counterparts, if you look at it closely, you actually save quite a lot in the long run. With a contract, the phone comes bundled with certain services, data plans and prices. You have to take these data plans whether you need them or not. However, when you are free from a contract, you can look around for the best priced data plans. Thus, in the long run, going for unlocked phones does save you quite a lot of money.

Freedom

Here too, the unlocked variety wins. If you are unhappy with the service provider, you can always switch to another network which provides better services. You do not have to fight it out with a network for two years.

Applications

Here, the contract variety has a slight advantage. In order to lure consumers, service providers bundle a host of applications with the phone and the contract. In the case of an unlocked device, you may not get the full suite of applications. However, it is not as much of a problem as it first seems to be. Most of the popular applications are free to download to use, so you dont lose out on much here too.

Do all service providers offer no-contract devices?

Most of the service providers offer no-contract retail on most of the popular brands out there. With a little research online, you can find Unlocked HTC Wildfire S, no-contract Samsung phones, unlocked T-Mobile HTC Amaze 4G and a host of other options. While all of them are still not available, most of them surely are.
