WHAT ARE THE COMPONENTS OF THE SYSTEM?
Rocket German is available as a set of CDs or as a download. The system consists of audio recordings, videos, and special software. In addition, you get access to the Learning Lounge where you can test your skills, and communicate with other users and teachers.
The idea behind the system is to try to teach German by "visual association". You learned your mother tongue by visual association. You SAW something and HEARD the word for it at the same time. In this manner you easily and quickly learned the meanings of words. Rocket German aims to duplicate the process with the use of audio, video, and specially designed software.
HOW WELL DOES IT WORK?
If you are serious and willing to work with the material regularly, Rocket German is a very powerful way to learn to speak German. Ideally, you should try to view the material for a little time everyday (at least 30 min - 1 hr a day). The lessons are designed to build on each other. Because of this, being consistent is crucial.
Learning a language is much like learning to ride a bike. For the first little while you might feel that you are not getting anywhere. If you keep going, however, you will hit a point where things suddenly come together. You will find yourself making sentences without effort and hearing most of the words in the audio recordings.
From there you can go on to add more vocabulary and more advanced grammar.
IS IT THE BEST WAY TO GO FOR EVERY STUDENT?
Some people find it hard to focus if there is no outside pressure such as an upcoming "exam" or an instructor checking their "homework".
Rocket German is a self-paced approach. It is very powerful but you have to provide the consistency yourself.
If you think you might need the pressure of a class situation in order to take action, consider a class at a local college. Remember, however, that classroom instruction will cost more and can take longer.
