Should You Have A Hearing Test?

A hearing test is a good idea for people of all ages

. There is always a risk that you may be losing some of your ability to hear just by going through daily life. In some situations, infants experience loss. That's why even newborns are screened for reaction to sound. Later on, in elementary school, most children will have in-school screenings to ensure their ability to hear is at the level it needs to be. However, after that, many people don't get these screenings enough and that could be a problem. No matter your age, you should have some level of screening on a regular basis.

Age Is a Factor

One of the biggest factors in any type of loss is age. If you are over the age of 60, your doctor may recommend that you have a hearing test annually at least. Sometimes, these screenings even start a decade earlier due to the risk factors you exhibit. For example, for those people over the age of 65, some type of loss is likely in at least 30 percent of all people. Those who are ages 45 through 60 also can experience loss at a rate of about 14 percent of people. For those younger than this through the age of 18, about eight million people in the United States have loss. When you factor in statistics, it is clear to see that there is a reason to worry at any age.

Do You Have Problems?

It is also a good idea to have an official hearing test when you are experiencing loss symptoms. For example, if you are unable to hear people speak to you or understand what they are saying, this is a common symptom of a problem. In fact, many people will have difficult with sounds such as the letter "s" in the word "sun." This soft constant sound is one of the first difficulties individuals with loss have. If you are experiencing symptoms such as needing to turn the volume up on the television or being unable to hear over the phone, then it may be time to get a further screening to find out if you have any type of loss.

The good news is that many people can see improvement even if they have some type of loss. Though some situations cannot be fixed, others can with the use of a special device that fits in the ear canal. If you have not had a screening and you are in a risk group, such as someone who is exposed to loud sounds regularly, it is time to do something about that. Schedule a hearing test and find out what may be happening to you.
