Should You Include Salary History On Resume?
Whenever you apply for any position, it is important to write your CV according to the requirements of the employers
. Once your CV is shortlisted, you will face the personal interview with the employer. After you pass in the interview, employer will call you for the salary negotiation. This is the general process of any recruitment; however some industries are conducting many other rounds for verifying the candidates appropriateness for the job. From the above discussion, it is clear that employer will discuss about the salary at the end of the recruitment process. Hence, you must avoid saying anything about it in your CV or during the interview unless asked by the interviewer. However, some employers ask to list the salary expectations in your CV. You can include these details if employer asks to do so. Here we discuss on how to include your salary history on your resume.
Salary History :
Provide the salary details in your CV only if asked. Include your salary history only if you know that your application will not be considered without having your previous salary details listed in it. Company may be willing to pay you more than what you were getting previously. Listing your previous salary details may cut off higher salaries.
Some employers may even reject your resume if they think you received too less salary for your last job, no matter how attractive your previous profile was. You can explain to the employer about your previous salary during face to face interaction. But if you list it in CV, it may sometimes create some misunderstandings.
Although it is considered bad to include your salary information in your CV, it can be listed when demanded by the employer.
How to include salary history in Resume?
You can either prepare a separate document for providing salary history or include it in your resume itself. The format of your salary history should match the format of your resume or cover letter.
The format for presenting your salary history is given below
Job Title
Company Name
Dates of Employment
Annual Salary
Starting Salary
Relieving Salary
You can fill the appropriate details here and attach the sheet along with your CV. You can also include the details of other compensation information like insurance benefits, bonus packages, allowances, commissions, etc. These details can be added in the figure of your total salary amount.
Now you must know why the employers are interested in knowing your previous salary details.
This is done for two reasons
1.Firstly to cut out the individuals those are over or under qualified for the job .
2.And secondly, to be on the drivers seat at the time of salary negotiation.
If your salary history says that your previous salary was in the range of 40K-50K, employer will not have much scope for negotiation and they may consider candidate out of their budget range. But if your salary history tells that your previous salary was below the budget range, there will be great scope for negotiation for employers.
Disclosure of salary history is to the advantage of the employer.
Note: Present the salary history only if demanded by the employer. It must be presented only if it states that your application will not be considered unless this information is presented along with your CV.
