Social media sites have changed the way people stay in touch with their friends and family. People post personal details about their lives on a daily basis. In divorce cases, doing so can have significant consequences.

Social networking has drastically shaken the world of divorce. Now, divorce lawyers use social networking websites to track down information they can use in their divorce cases.

For example, suppose a divorce lawyer finds out that his clients spouse has been posting comments on his or her profile, saying that he wants to steal his kids and never give them back to the other parent. This could actually be used as evidence against that individual, and it could cause problems with him or her receiving child custody or visitation.

Heres another example. Suppose one of the spouses posts pictures of an expensive vacation they recently took on their own, but in their divorce case, theyre trying to claim that theyre broke and dont have any money for child support or alimony. Again, the information found online could be used as evidence to show that the divorcing spouse does in fact have money and is likely hiding funds.

Suppose theres a court order against one of the divorcing parties preventing him from using drugs or alcohol, but pictures or information discovered on Facebook indicate that the individual has been violating the court order. This could be presented as evidence in court, and it could change the outcome of the divorce proceedings.

Its in your best interest to stay away from social media during your divorce. Everything you post can be used as evidence against you.

Here are some reasons to stay away from social media:

Privacy settings are always changing-Social networking sites are constantly changing their privacy settings, so even if you think your profile is private right now, updates could cause certain information to become available to the public. Its just not worth the risk.

Can you trust your mutual friends?-Chances are, you still have some friends on your social networks that are also friends with your ex. Can you really trust them not to report back to your former spouse? They could pose a threat as potential leaks of information that could be used against you in your divorce trial.
