Engines are often used in different environments, most of which have high amounts of dust present. Because such contaminants can cause premature motor failure, they must be removed before they can cause any damage. For that reason, air cleaners must be fitted to engines. It is possible to extend the maintenance interval though by using a pre-cleaner.
What is a Pre-Cleaner?
It is a device that is installed in the intake system of an engine before thse air cleaner. It removes much of the contamination and dirt present in the incoming air. Also, it is very effective in removing large dirt particles and water droplets. As a result, it will greatly reduce the amount of pollutant that reaches the air cleaner, as well as extends the filter life.
How does a Pre-Cleaner work?
There are many different types of devices available. Most of them use some form of inertial separation process to remove dirt without using a replaceable filter.
Because particles are heavier than air, they will continue to travel in the same direction even if airflow is made to move towards the opposite side. This effectively separates the contaminants from air. This means that the heavier the particles, the more efficient the process is.
Does the choice of Pre-Cleaner matter?
Yes. Apart from the different types, all pre-cleaners need the airflow to be moving at a reasonable speed for the separation process to work effectively. If it is too large for the engine, the air will not be able to travel rapidly enough for the pollutants to separate, which means that dirt will stay mixed with the incoming air. On the other hand, if it is too small, the level of restriction of the intake system will be too high for the engine.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF PRE-CLEANERS.
Air Ram
It is the simplest form of pre-cleaner and is effective in removing dust and water at high speeds, making it suitable for highway operation. Also, it has the added advantage of reducing restriction to the air system during rapid movements. However, it is important that they are installed correctly for better performance.
It is ineffective at low speed and on stationary equipment.
Inline Separators
Often used as a second pre-cleaner for on-highway vehicles, these are effective in removing larger dirt particles and water at great speed. They have a set of vanes that causes the air to spin as it passes through the unit, expelling dirt and water.
Full View Pre-Cleaners
They have angled vanes that cause the incoming air to spin rapidly around the pre-cleaner. Contaminants and water is collected in the outer bowl, while the cleansed air passes down the centre of the unit to the cleaner. Once the bowl is full it needs to be emptied manually. Full view style pre-cleaners operate at about 75% efficiency, making them suitable in low speed and stationary applications. While they can be used on high-speed vehicles, they will increase the level of restriction to the incoming air.
Top Spin Pre-Cleaner
This works similarly to the full view type except that they are self-emptying. Working at 85% efficiency, they have a rotating vane that expels the separated dust out to the side of the pre-cleaner. Again, while they can be used on high-speed vehicles, they are best suited to slow-moving and stationary equipment.
Strata Caps
These contain small, vaned tubes that cause the air to spin very rapidly. These operate at an impressive 95% efficiency. The downside, however, is that they need to be used in conjunction with an exhaust scavenge system to clear away the separated contamination.
DID YOU KNOW?
Pre-cleaners are a great way to extend your filter life, but they are not a substitute for an air purifier. They must not be used in place of an air cleaner.
