Should a Blog be About One Thing or Several Things
?
One question or dilemma that many blog owners find themselves in is wondering whether their blog should be about one thing or several things. Keeping the blog's niche really focused on one subject matter will reach more people looking for that specific information, but it won't reach those who are searching for other subject matters. Do to this, many blog owners decide to make their blogs about a few different niches, but is this really a good idea?
There are several factors that should be considered before deciding to make a blog about one thing or about several things. In no particular order, they are:
What type of blog is it? If the blog is meant to be newsworthy or political in nature, then the blogger has a little bit more wiggle room regarding expanding the blog niche.
How is the blog going to be found? If the blogger is relying completely on organic search engine results, then keeping it focused on one niche may be better than making a blog with vague or broad subject matters.
Is the blog for the public? If the blog is just a personal or family blog that you share with other family and friends, then search engine results are not relevant.
Is the blog getting any traffic when writing about the original subject matter? If not, then changing the focus or expanding a little bit might not hurt.
The general rule of thumb is that a blog should be focused and not all over the place. The blogger wants to come off as an authority figure in the niche that they are blogging about. If the blog is about too many subject matters than that is going to be very hard to do.
