From the outset let me tell you that an act of infidelity is probably one of the hardest indiscretions for any couple to overcome. So to ask "does an affair mean the end", I would have to say that in the majority of cases, it does.

Basically, it comes down to this - Is the innocent party prepared to forgive such an act of betrayal? That's really the bottom line and in reality, there are not too many among us that are prepared to do this. Having said that, as Christians where would we be if we did not have forgiveness in our hearts.

From experience, I know that the first reaction of anyone learning about their partner's indiscretion is to end the relationship there and then. After that come the hurt, disbelief and the shock of finding themselves in such a position.

In reality, the worst thing that you could do when faced with such a predicament would be to end it on the spot. You need time to fully understand what has happened to your once happy relationship. You need time to understand why your partner needed to have the affair and you need time to get your head sorted out.

To do this all on your own is not going to be easy and this is where you will need some form of outside help if you decide that you want to go on with your partner. To act as if nothing has happened and go on your merry way would be a disaster. You might think that you are OK, but more than likely, somewhere deep inside of you, there are unhealed wounds that need to be attended to. It is very noble to defy the trend and try and make your relationship work again, but an act of infidelity is something that needs more than a bandage to fix.

Loving, happy relationships are those that are built on trust and mutual respect. To learn that your partner has betrayed that trust is possibly the worst news that you will ever hear. It is something that will take plenty of time to overcome, but it is not impossible. There are many couples that have managed to overcome infidelity and they are to be applauded for having done this.

Does an affair mean the end? For many couples it does, but there are some special people out there that with the right help and forgiveness in their heart, manage to get their relationship back on track.

If you believe in happy endings, your dreams, hopes and aspirations haven't ended. They have simply changed. Who knows, your love may even be stronger if you can learn how to make your relationship work after an affair.
