Show Off Your Horse In Style
The strong muscular form and graceful gait, this is a showcase of some of the best athletes in the world
. We're not talking about the Olympics, but the competition is often just as fierce and the participants have been training just as hard and for just as long. Welcome to the horse show - one of the oldest forms of non-human competition.
If you're an avid horseback rider, you may be looking to start competing in any number of fields. There are various different types of horse shows on regional, state and international levels, regulated by a number of internationally recognised organisations. The events you choose to take part in depending on your style and preferences when riding - and the abilities of your horse.
Types of Horse Shows
Dressage
The English are especially known for their equestrian events and English style riding features a number of different competitive areas. One of the oldest professional level equestrian competitions, featured in the Olympic arena, is dressage. Traditionally, dressage is considered one of the most advanced forms of riding as it requires years of training for both the rider and the horse. Dressage almost resembles a ballet - rider and mount work together to complete a series of complex moves and routines. They are then judged on their technical ability and skill in executing these manoeuvres.
Jumping
There are generally two types of jumping events, show jumping and show hunters. In show jumping, also known as stadium jumping, rider and animal are judged on their successful completion within the allotted time of the obstacles laid out on the course. The pair is scored objectively based on whether they attempt the jump and their successful clearing of the obstacle.
Meanwhile, show hunters are another class of jumpers where animal and rider are judged on their style, manner and grace as they complete each jump. Show hunter competitions are considered more subjective than show jumping as much of the final score is determined by form.
Rodeo and Cattle Events
Moving away from the English traditions, Western style riding has become increasingly popular, especially in the US and amongst cattle ranchers in Australia. As a result, competitions and shows demonstrating this unique way of riding and handling a horse have emerged. Rodeos and cattle ranching events let riders demonstrate the technical precision and exceptional teamwork that is often required for working on a ranch.
Certain breeds of horse naturally take to particular types of competitions. While most events don't have particular breed specifications, animals will usually compete against other entrants in a similar weight class. Many breeds excel in particular areas or competition Thoroughbred horses are known to be great show jumpers while quarter horses stallion services are sometime selected by the their performance in rodeos.
