Show of Shame

Show of shame is a phrase that is constantly active in the world today. Every scene of it is an ugly display of how not somebody or a group of people should behave.

In other words, show of shame could be an aberration in the sense that it violates all known laws of decency or good conduct. Show of shame could also be patterned and deliberate when it is done willfully and the rapidity becomes so much that it turns into a way of life.

Though it is preponderant in Nigeria and among Nigerians yet it can be seen in other lands and in other forms and what amounts to a show of shame in one country or area may be accepted in another place as a norm but such norms are operative only within the precincts of the society in question.

For instance, official corruption which is seen as a serious crime and a malicious show of shame in the West is celebrated in Nigeria and Africa while homosexuality, a serious show of shame which is abhorred in Nigeria like leprosy is accepted and legalized in South Africa and some countries in Europe and North America. Other pieces of show of shame, which have relative global acceptance, are adultery and licentiousness.

While a legislator can be forced to resign for watching pornography and a president can be impeached for having oral sex in Europe and America respectively, it is seen as manliness in Africa. The many escapades of randy Jacob Zuma, the South African President which include taking a fourth wife, having a baby out of adultery and openly admitting it plus the alleged unprotected sex he had with an HIV-positive female acquaintance which could have landed him in jail if it were in other lands are largely ignored and he is still a free man ready for the next action.

In Nigeria, a senator was accused of marrying a 13-year old Egyptian girl after the payment of $100,000 to her parents and because his faith permits that, it is nobody's business.

In the household of God as the Christians here will call their church building, one can situate some conducts in a wider show of shame context or how else can one explain the story that a female Bishop not even a pastor, who is also a widow, general overseer and mother of seven children (and females are also bishops) could open her legs for a teenager in her church in the name of delusive love.

This happened in Lagos, Nigeria. Today, I learnt that the 2-year-old marriage has broken up but only after the deed had been done.

Have you noticed the new fad among almost all the bishops in Nigeria? Most of them now have either a female secretary or personal assistant (PA) while the men are there. "My brother something is happening in the household of God but I don't know."

Then to the Nigeria Police and the fascination for twenty-naira note. It is now an open thing at their "very strategic roadblocks" which are normally abandoned when they sight "Abuja boys." Guy you know what I mean now. I no wan call their name.

Incidents that translate into show of shame cannot be exhausted. However, I must mention the huge show of shame that occurred in Bloemfontein during a World Cup match between Nigeria and Greece and in the full glare of publicity when Nigeria's Sani Kaita aimed a kick at Vasilis Torosid, a Greek player without the ball and in the process earned a red card. As he left the pitch, he covered his face with his jersey in shame. There are reports that aggrieved football-loving Nigerians have sent about 1000 emails to him threatening to kill him but this is wrong and another show of shame. It was one moment of madness, which we must muster up the courage to forgive. If we kill him, will Nigeria win the World Cup?

Another show of shame, which I must discuss, is the purported "can of worms" being opened against Speaker Dimeji Bankole by a group known as the "Progressive Minded Legislators" or (PML), led by Honourable Dino Melaye that led to a fierce hand-to-hand combat in the House following the suspension of the members of the PML. Truly it has been damning enough but the Speaker's camp remains in continuous denial so who do we believe? I want to add that if the allegations are true, then the Honourable Speaker must step aside to allow a thorough and unimpeded investigation.

There is also this report that the senators and members of the House of Representatives take home up to N351 million and N147 million per person respectively. Overall, the National Assembly is projected to cost a whooping N138 billion according to the 2010 budget.

After the budget had been passed and signed into law, senators and House members began fresh moves to push quarterly allowances to N100 million and N45 million per person. Finally, they settled for N60 million and N45 million per senator and House member respectively in a country with gross domestic product (GDP) of about $175 billion per year and where doctors, teachers and civil servants can't boast of N1 million a year. What a show of shame! What kind of democracy is this?

This piece will not be complete without mentioning Nigera's royal Mike Tyson, the deposed Deji of Akure, who on a certain day of pugilism forgot his royalty and opted for a brawl in the street with one of his wives. Many have described that as Nigeria's worst show of shame 2010. Today he is deposed and banished and I am sure by now his eyes are clear and the reality of his misdeed must have dawned on him.

Show of shame what does it mean to you? Think about it. Have you been involved in one?
