Side Effects of Meloxicam
One of the most common conditions treated by veterinarians is arthritis in dogs
. Overweight and inactive dogs are the perfect candidates for this health concern. Arthritis is a degenerative disease which causes stiffness in the joints and muscles. NSAID or Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs reduce dog arthritis stiffness, pain and inflammation and help to improve the overall quality of life for dogs suffering from this common joint condition. Mild pain relief due to arthritis in dogs was once treated with low-dose aspirins in the past but the recent development of a new class of anti-inflammatory drugs has changed the whole course of dog arthritis treatment. Adequan is an injection which is given as a series of injections twice weekly, but not more than eight injections in total. If the dog responds to Adequan, injections will be given as needed.
NSAIDs are used primarily to treat inflammation, mild to moderate pain, and fever. Specific uses include the treatment of headaches, arthritis, sports injuries, and menstrual cramps. Aspirin is used to inhibit the clotting of blood and prevent strokes and heart attacks in individuals at high risk. In general, medications for rheumatoid arthritis can be classified into distinctive categories, as described below. Physicians will often develop an appropriate treatment plan to manage joint pain and inflammation, as well as prevent cell damage in the joints.
Although corticosteroids can be effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis, they are known to trigger adverse effects when used in extended periods of time. DMARDs are a group of medications that act to suppress the immune system from attacking the joints, thus retarding the progression of further joint damage. Among the examples of DMARDs previously listed, hydroxychloroquine has the least risk of causing bone marrow and liver toxicity, and is therefore considered to be one of the safest DMARD types. Unfortunately, hydroxychloroquine is not a particularly powerful medication, and is not strong enough on its own to control the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
These drugs are effective but they have potential side effects including peptic ulcer disease, kidney and liver damage, rashes, and fluid retention. Another problem associated with these drugs is the slight increase in cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke. These drugs require careful monitoring. These drugs target the cells and cytokines that are the primary cause of rheumatoid arthritis. These drugs work quickly. Etanercept, adalimumab, and infliximab are anti-TNF drugs. They block tumor necrosis factor- the major culprit in RA - and by doing so keep it from doing damage.
Classes of medications that are commonly used to treat back pain include: anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxers, pain medications, and topical treatments. If your income is below $45,000 and you are not a Medicare patient, you may qualify for the Together Rx Access program for discounted drugs, available online or through your physician. You can also check online for coupons to offset your cost or your co-pay. Straight pain medications are also useful. Tylenol (acetaminophen) provides sufficient relief for many people. It can often be used with an NSAID - but consult your doctor first.
