Sideboards - A Piece Of History In Your Home.

It was round about the 1770s that Sideboards first started appearing in Britain

. The earliest type was called 'slab tables'. These early Sideboards often had marble tops as they were used not only to serve food and drink, but also prepare and cut food. The slab tables were no more than a top with legs and there was no storage on them. In 1788, the famous cabinetmaker Hepplewhite showed a sideboard in his illustrated style guide. Hepplewhite's piece had moved away from the slab table as it had the addition of storage space.

The Hepplewhite sideboard would have been used to store silver ware, dinnerware and other dining accoutrements. Modern Sideboards can be used in exactly the same way as the grand Hepplewhite and Chippendale (he also got in on the act) pieces. In the years from 1770, no dining room would have been considered complete without Sideboards. We may not have the grand dining style of the Hepplewhite and Chippendale era, but there is absolutely no reason why we shouldn't have one in modern homes today.

We have all seen some period dramas where a group of people are sitting in a grand dining room at a heavily laden table being served food from the sideboard. Whilst we may not have the servants or the grand dining rooms of yesteryears, we do still dine and need storage space for our cutlery and china. Therefore, Sideboards are pieces of history we can have in our homes today. Versatile and beautiful, they are ideal pieces of furniture for living rooms, dining rooms or indeed kitchens.

Where do you find your ideal sideboard? One of the best places to start looking is online. Not only is it free; there is a huge selection of retailers with a multitude of different ranges of Sideboards. If you want something grander and akin to the 1770's style, you will be able to find it. If however you want modern, contemporary or sleek, then you are sure to find that as well. Online shopping is a great way to get all the information you need before making your purchase.

Before you do commit to buying your sideboard; do check the space you want to fill. Measure the place you want to the sideboard to go, and then look for one. Sideboards come in a huge range of sizes from the petite to very large. So it's crucial to check that what you like or want will fit into your room. A sideboard will work in a living room even as a TV stand. It will be equally at home in the kitchen where we often need more storage space. Good quality Sideboards will last you for many years, and may even become a family heirloom, thereby keeping the history of the sideboard alive.
