Sights And Other Interesting Places In Riga, Latvia!
Riga was built by German crusaders and early buildings and churches were put up in
a Romanesque and Gothic styles which German craftsmen and Cistercian monks brought from Northern Germany. People have occasionally called Riga little Paris while Napoleon once referred to it as a suburb of London. This may be because Napoleon never conquered London or Riga.
The Museum of the Occupation of Latvia
Once a museum honouring the Latvian Red Riflemen, the building now houses a fascinating museum dedicated to the Nazi and Soviet occupations of Latvia. The various exhibits display the atrocities committed against the people of Latvia and the systematic destruction of their nation's sovereignty.
Grebenshchikov Church
The first wooden place of worship was built here in 1760, and the current building went up in 1814. It is home to one of the largest congregations of Old Believers in the world (about 10,000), an Orthodox Christian sect that fled persecution in Russia in the 17th century.
Arcadia Park
Created at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, this pleasant park is divided by the meandering Mrupte river which was diverted for the project.
A restaurant building and an amphitheatre were part of the original park but were burned down over the years by vandals and never restored. Today, you can follow the course of the river and feed ducks from its banks or take in the view from the top of the hill.
Galleria Riga
This new downtown shopping centre on several floors offers dozens of shops never before seen in Latvia as well as a Rimi supermarket, a rooftop terrace right in the centre of Riga and a whole floor of restaurants and bars.
Shopping
