Sigiriya Museum Encompassing The Wonder Of History And Heritage

The Sigiriya Mountain is one of the most famed and fantastic archeological wonders of Sri Lanka

. Rising 200m above ground level this flat rock served as a stronghold to an ancient kingdom, of which remnants can still be witnessed. Considered to be the most visited site in the island, this architectural wonder is an impressive combination of engineering, urban planning, hydraulic technology, garden design, sculpture, painting and poetry. The Sigiriya Museum has been a project that was adopted over fifty years ago. The year 1960 saw a site museum being built in a honeycomb like structure featuring a series of hexagonal designs that made up several connecting rooms that surrounded a courtyard built in the same manner. By the time 1982 came about though, this building - now a historical structure had fallen into neglect. The new museum came through because of the visionary planning of the Cultural Triangle Project. It was envisioned that the new museum should consist of an on-site conservation laboratory as well as a research centre and visitor information centre.

Retaining its old hexagonal structure, the new museum sought to make new strides towards helping visitors understand the structure and the history surrounding it. Adopting the artifact is text concept, it presents an information centre that makes allowances for each individual to understand the site and its archeological importance in his/her own terms. With the use of models, photographs, artifacts and plans each gallery seeks to take the visitor on a journey connecting the different artifacts to the history of the place. Built with a view of complementing all the components of this architectural wonder as a whole, the museum allows visitors to focus on any specific point of interest as they see fit.
