Make sure that the program is structured in nature with themed lessons. In order for you to learn sign language, you cannot learn simply by a list of words. Instead, you need a program that is themed. After learning the set of vocabulary words in each themed lesson, you should be offered retention exercises to practice your new knowledge. After completing each exercise, you should be able to see your score of your correct answers. Additionally, you need to find a program that offers grammar instruction. Learning sign language without learning American Sign Language grammar will not benefit you in the least. You need to be familiar with the grammatical structure of sign language. Lastly, a good sign language program online should have a way for you to practice fingerspelling, numbers, and other receptive skills. Learning to fingerspell is one of the most important skills you can develop while learning how to sign.
