This practice has been in vogue since ancient times, although there have been several modifications to the same. Nevertheless, the wedding band has retained its significance and importance to this day.

A Brief History of the Wedding Band

The earliest wedding bands were perhaps designed and worn by the Egyptians. These were made of plant stems and were round in shape. It has been found that the circular shape denoted eternal love between married partners. Both the husband and the wife used to wear these wedding bands. Later the tradition was continued by the Romans although this time, only the women had to wear the bands. Another level of connotation was also added during these times. Apart from being a sign of marriage, the wedding band also meant that the woman was a 'property' of an individual man, thus becoming a mark of patriarchal ownership or claim. In the Middle East and Asia this was also a symbol of faithfulness for the woman.

The Modern Wedding Band

Although the connotation and definition of marriage vows have undergone a series of different interpretations, wedding bands have continued to be a significant component of a marriage till today. Replacing the humble plant stem, today there are gold and silver bands with precious gems and stones embedded in them. Diamond studded bands with glittering jewels are also pretty common. Whatever is the design and the look, the role of the wedding band remains the same, that of denoting the respect and commitment towards the sacred institution called marriage.
