Silentnight...Try Ten Years Without a Lie-in
Silentnight...Try Ten Years Without a Lie-in
I have had trouble sleeping for the past 10 years. I slipped a disc while playing university rugby and since them sleeping has become something I am not very good at. It has had quite a dramatic effect on my, I am tired a lot of the time, have far less energy than a man of my age should have and my demeanor has changed. I was always the happy-go-lucky guy with the positive outlook, and slowly over time I have found myself become grumpy and cynical, almost the opposite of who I used to be.
I think as we grow up we go through a lot of stages and obviously 32 year old me is different to 22 year old me, slipped disc or not. I just feel that so much of the changes I've undergone are due to my inability to sleep properly.
In the last few months I have been getting about 4 hours solid sleep a night with an hour of fitful sleep before waking. Compared to previous years there has been an improvement but not significantly. I'm not much of a doctor guy, but last year I went to the Doctors and talked through my problem. By back seizes up when I lie down for prolonged periods and the pain of that is what wakes me. I didn't want pain suppressants because I think the pain is telling me to move and not feeling the pain would hurt me in a more profound way. And I definitely did not want sleeping pills.
The Doctor was at a loss, I tried hypnotherapy at her advice, but it made no difference. I think it was a last ditch attempt, but the Doctor advised me to try a Silentnight mattress to see if that would make a difference.
I wish someone had given me that one piece of advice 10 years ago. Or I had thought of it myself. It seems so obvious to me now, but it honestly never crossed my mind. I saw a Silentnight Sleep Specialist (they exist) and he showed me a few Silentnight mattresses with memory foam. What a difference. I bought a Silentnight Mattress that very day, and the improvement has been very substantial. I sleep about 7 hours a night now, and my mood has got much lighter, I honestly feel like a new man.
Conclusion
Difficulty sleeping is a common thing. Suffering from it for ten years is less common; it fundamentally changed me, unfortunately for the worse. I feel like I missed out on a lot of fun and excitement in my twenties because of my sleeping problem. However, now that I have found the cure' I am going to make up for what I missed out on!
