Silkscreen artists working in graphic design and textiles weave their magic by blending inks and dyes to transfer images, either hand-drawn or computer-generated, straight onto fabrics like cloth and canvas. Sources of image designs can hand drawings, stencil and photos.


The screen print industry has advanced at a rapid pace in a just a few years. Newer uses and applications for screen printing include touch sensitive control systems for the maritime and aeronautic industries.

Training for silkscreen artists can be either be provided in a work place as part of an ongoing position, or through workshops or specialised training courses.

More business minded artists have also been to known to set up their own galleries to sell and promote their own work.

Typical entry level salaries start at under 20,000 per annum for trainees, and up to the 25,000 - 30,000 range for managers.

Potential employers usually require trainee screen printers to have GCSE or equivalent qualifications in English or maths.

Various courses, both full and part time, are available at colleges throughout the UK, including: City & Guilds (printing and Graphic Communications) and other courses in print media, screen printing, and graphic print making.
