Sim Only Contracts - What You Kneed To Know

In their constant scramble to attract new customers

, the major UK mobile phone networks introduced sim only contracts. Sim only contracts have become increasingly popular over the last few years due their relative cheapness and flexibility. In this article I will attempt to give you the facts on sim only deals in the hope that it will help you make an informed decision.

What is a sim only contract?

A sim only contractl is a mobile phone contract that includes just a sim card with a set monthly usage allowance of minutes, texts and data. You pay a flat fee per month depending on your choice of usage allowance. A mobile phone is not included in the deal.

If you wish, you may keep your existing mobile phone number. To do this make sure you obtain a Porting Authorisation Code (PAC) from your current network provider before you leave, and give this code to the new sim only network provider.

What are the advantages of a sim only contract?

There are two distinct advantages. The first is their cost. Compared to mobile phone deals that include a handset, a sim only deal is much cheaper. You will get more minutes, texts and data per month for less money. The second advantage is their sheer flexibility. You will not have to commit to a long term contract. Sim only deals are available with as little as thirty day contract notice, so if another deal attracts your eye you will not be penalised for ending your contract after a short period.

What is required for a sim only contract?

With a sim only deal you will have to use your existing mobile phone handset. In addition, your handset will need to be network unlocked

Mobile phone network unlocking is a relatively easy task there are many unlocking services available online and at most mobile phone repair shops. However, before you use one of these unlocking services, make sure that your phone isn't already unlocked. You can check this by trying a friend's sim card in your phone; if the phone is able to make and receive calls with your friend's sim card inserted then it probably is already unlocked.

If your phone is locked then it is a good idea to give your existing network a call before you leave; sometimes they will unlock it for you for free provided you have completed your contract commitments with them.

Conclusion

Sim only contracts are a great way to save a considerable amount of money provided you don't want a shiny new mobile phone!
