Similarities And Differences: Panama And The United States
Moving to Panama is a spectacular or even brilliant idea
, especially if you are considering retiring there. It has got a great tropical maritime climate similar to South Florida and it has beaches, fishing, and surf that are totally world class. But what are the similarities to the United States? People like to know what living in Panama is going to be like not to mention what they can expect from Panama retirement. Well, a little research can go a long way to clarifying what will make Panama such an exceptional retirement locale.
Though the official language of the country is of course Spanish, you should not fear. Vast majorities of the population are bilingual and speak both Spanish and English. This means that you do not need a guide book or language lessons to fit in here, though it is not unlikely that you will pick up Spanish easily while you are living immersed in it.
In some ways, Panama is more desirable than the United States in terms specific elements of living. They have a constitutional democracy which some time ago abolished the death penalty. Their population is about three hundred million people less than that of the United States of America. This probably accounts for the great unspoiled beaches and large amounts of land available for the enjoyment of its population.
They allow women in government and actually have the same percentage of women serving the people as the United States does. They also have a comparable literacy rate and life expectancy! What they do have is a lower unemployment rate (less than half that of the US at present levels) and far less external debt weighing down their government.
It is quite an easy comparison to make actually. Even the health care that's available for its citizens is on par with that of the United States. The transition should not be too much trouble.
Moving to a different country can be incredibly nerve wracking. What if you do not know the customs or the language? What happens if you get sick or do not like the food? For those looking at Panama for retirement, they are lucky in this comparison. Their move will be made significantly easier by the fact that it's a similar environment to what they're used to.
Would it not make you feel better if you knew that where you were going had no life altering and discernible difference to where you came from save for the fact that there was a beach and far more sun?
