Simple Elegance Of Designer Chikan Sarees

This age old embroidery art form of Lucknow can be considered to be quite a few centuries old

. Although an ancient ethnic embroidery art form of India, Chikan Kari was strongly advocated by Mughal emperor Jehangirs wife, Noor Jehan. Even though Chikankari was counted amongst Indias ancient embroidery form, it was not until the 17th and 18th centuries that Chikankari attained the zenith of its popularity.

The term Chikankari is derived from the Persian word chikin which means embroidery on muslin. Outfits adorned with Chikankari re-surface every summer as they make the most comfortable clothing items during summer season. Chikankari is usually done on lighter fabrics in pastel shades with soft resham and other embroidery threads, hence the reason for its being so comfortable. Chikankari can be spotted on a wide range of outfits including Salwar Kameez, Churidar Suit, Stoles, Scarves, Kurtis, etc. Sarees with Chikankari are seldom seen and this precisely makes Chikankari Sarees quite unique and unconventional.

Indian Chikankari Sarees can be considered as the epitome of elegance. Sarees meant for Chikankari are often in light fabrics such as cotton, chiffon, georgette, linen, viscose, etc., georgette being the most popular choice. The entire Saree is adorned with resham embroidered Chikankari in ornate pattern. Traditionally, Chikankari was done with white resham or embroidery thread which still continues to be widely used. But with the advent of Designer Chikan Sarees, resham or embroidery threads in a similar shade to that of the fabric or even in a contrast color for a striking look are also used. Designer Chikan Sarees usually do not display attractive borders which is typical of so many Designer Sarees. The main and only highlight of Designer Chikan Sarees is quite simply the Chikankari. Since its a complete hand embroidery art form and cannot possibly be machine embroidered, it takes months at times to complete a Chikankari pattern on a Saree.
