Simple Repairs Around the Home

Some of the hardest parts of any home repair job involve making sure that everything needed is present and that the area is prepared properly. Home owners often do not perform a basic check list before making some simple repairs, which ends up making the job longer than it has to be, or even making the house worse than it was before the job was started. Here are five common jobs that can be done around the house that often need to be done.

Painting

Painting is the easiest way to effectively update or improve the look of a room. No matter how small or large the job is, painting can help a room look more attractive because a bad paint job results in the room looking shabby, which brings down the quality of the house. Prepping the area involves removing and furniture and fixtures that could get paint spilled on them. Remove curtain rods, door hinges and switch-plates. Cover all baseboard and all light switches with duct tape in order to protect them from the paint. At the end of the job, recycle the paint instead of throwing it away.

Door Maintenance

A door can make squeaking sounds as well as stick so that it will not open. Indoor as well as outdoor entrances can do this just the same. Wooden doors located inside the house can swell in humid weather and contract in cold weather. Before adjusting the planes on the sides of the door, make sure to properly prepare the area. Get a carpenter's plane in order to shave wood off the planes in order to make the door fit. A hammer and screwdriver may be necessary in order to remove the hinges.

Caulking

Caulk is what holds the tiles inside a shower together, the rim of a bathtub to the wall, or the outer edge of toilet to the floor. Unfortunately, moisture can also eat away at caulk over time, which makes replacing it necessary. Before replacing it, make sure that there is no moisture to speak of in the bathroom in question. It is imperative that moisture does not get behind the rim of the bathtub because that is what gives the impetus for mould to grow, which is the death knell for any room in the house.

Tap Washer Repair

Replacing a tap washer is necessary because water, being the universal solvent, eats away at the plastic the washer is made of. This not only annoying, but potentially dangerous; a leaky faucet can waste a lot of water each year. Get the necessary tools, such as a hammer, a screwdriver, etc. before beginning.

Toilet Clogs

Perhaps the most annoying part of any home repair is unclogging the toilet. Using a plunger will often take care of this problem.
