Most families are struggling these days to make ends meet. So, in the mean time the family dynamic stucture is changed. What I

am trying to say is that children are going to have to get off the bus and come home to an empty house. And I am putting together a few tips to help with an already stressful situation to make it a little safer transition.

When you are left without a plan B for child care after school, here is a few things you can do to make sure your children are prepared.

be certain your children can care for themselves.

Children should be taught and reinforced on safety rules around the house. Are you allowed to use the gas stove after school? What is the first thing you do when you walk in the door?

It is wise to know the friends of your kids, and try to know the parents. Set boundaries with them also because maybe the friend is not being honest that your child is home alone.

If you have a cell phone for your child, make certain that they know they can call you at work anytime with an emergency.

Remember, being home alone isn't about being a magical age of 13 or 14, it is about being responsible.

ARE THEY READY? CAN YOUR CHILDREN-

be trusted to go straight home after school without hanging out?

fully know how to lock up the house after entering and can use the phone to call for emergency help-911?

can they stay home alone and not be scared so much as to be afraid of anything that moves?

stay home while you run an errand, and not be scared to death when you return?

If you answered yes to these points maybe your child is "ready" to be home alone on occassion.

WHAT CAN YOU DO? * to make sure your children are ready to care for themselves.

Teach them that if the house does not quite seem "right", broken window, kicked in door, hear yelling and screaming, furniture upturned etc.., to run to the nearest safe neighbors house and call the emergency numbers.

Teach them basic safety rules.

Know where your kids are, what they are doing, and who they are with.

Most important thought to remember, everyone is a stranger when you are home alone, and DO NOT let anyone enter the house with them while you are not home.

If you still do not feel right about leaving your child home alone, maybe you could invest in an IP Camera. An IP Camera will send you text and email alerts to you while you are not home. With the camera pointing in the living room or kitchen, the child could be doing homework and you can be watching like you are home.
