Simple Web Design Guidelines for Newbies

Website can be a totally different experience for many designers. For someone new to internet, designing a website is fraught with many problems and differences. Here are few very simple tips to make websites better, more intuitive and user friendly.

1) No Background music: Using background music is one of the biggest blunders for many reasons. Since, music files are usually heavy, they take forever to download and hamper site download speed. Everyone doesn't appreciate the music nor has similar tastes in music as yours. So avoid background music altogether.

2) No Flash intros: A lot of websites are guilty of having a heavy flash intro on the home page. This can be suicidal. Very few people are interested in your long drawn flash animation and would rather prefer to be able to work with site as soon as possible.

3) No blinking text: You have already got the customer to visit your site, you do not need to show him eye catching flashing text to attract him. This is one of the most visually irritating things in a website.

4) No pop-up window: It's unanimous that people hate pop-ups that appear from nowhere. I strongly discourage them.

5) Do not use Mystery meat navigation (MNN): Mystery meat navigation refers to those interfaces which make it very difficult to users to find and use navigation menus. Many sites use MNN to exude coolness. Very few times they pull it off depending on their target audience and niche but mostly they are spectacularly successful in pissing off site visitors.

6) Do not use centre aligned text: Centrally aligned text is harder for eyes to read. Make it easier for visitors to read the content of your site by making it left aligned (unless you are using Persian or Arabic, in which case you will use right aligned text)

7) Do not use distracting background images: You may find tiled background of your hamster very endearing but such backgrounds distract the visitors and makes it harder for them to read the pages.

8) Do not use all caps text: All newbie web designers have been guilty of this. Lines after lines of all caps text greatly reduce the readability of a website. Just use to emphasize few words.

9) Use bold and italic text sparingly: Use these two styles only when you have make few words stand apart. Using them too much makes a page look busy and the readability factor takes a hit.

10) Do not make your website a rainbow: Rainbow is good but not when you are designing a website. Nobody will give you points for using all colors of the rainbow in your website. Use only as many colors that are needed and keep their usage consistent throughout the site.
