Sleeping is not rocket science but it can be extremely hard work considering it's supposed to come naturally to the human race and if you've ever suffered from restlessness or insomnia you'll understand just how badly it can affect state of mind, happiness, performance at work and relationships. Apart from making sure your bedroom isn't too hot or too cold, making sure there's a good supply of fresh air and ensuring it is quiet and relaxed, here are a few more practical issues to consider.
In order to keep your body at 36.5 degrees Celsius, the optimum temperature for sleeping, and for this to stay consistent throughout the night, it is recommended that sheets, duvet covers and pillow cases should be made from natural materials such as 100% pure cotton and 100% silk. These materials allow skin to breath and so do not create a barrier between your skin and the circulating air, meaning that you are less likely to become too hot during sleep.
The same principle applies to the type of duvet you use; this should ideally be filled with natural fibres such as feathers or down. However, if you are allergic to these materials there are plenty of alternatives which allow good ventilation and again minimise the chances of you becoming too hot and restless during the night. Having a good quality, breathable duvet and natural bed linen makes such a difference to the quality of sleep you get and instead of waking up feeling hot, sweaty and groggy, you'll wake up feeling cool, refreshed and full of beans.
Sleep experts state that you must be in a quiet, dark and relaxed environment in order to sleep well and while noisy neighbours and weekend house parties are beyond your control, make you've got double glazing a good set of black out curtains or a black out blind. Material for these can be bought for very little by the metre from the local market, local shop or online or you can buy them readymade so all you need to do is hang them behind your existing curtain or blind. These absorb sound as well as blocking out streetlights, security lights, headlights and sun and moon shine.
Finally and probably most importantly, ensure that you have a good bed, good mattress and good pillows. It's so tempting to skimp on these things as they can be pretty expensive but if you cut corners you're essentially saying that you don't mind being uncomfortable every night for the lifespan of your mattress.
