Singapore Coins And Notes Museum, A Showcase For Currency

The Singapore Coins and Notes Museum, a subsidiary of the Singapore Mint was created

first and foremost to educate the general public on the development and history of currency in the form of notes and coins. It is the only museum focusing on currency in Singapore. The first money was brought to Singapore by traders in 1819, and in subsequent years silver dollars were the favoured form of currency. Eventually these foreign-minted notes and coins were replaced by Singapore-minted currency.

The museum displays currency from many different time periods, originating from many countries around the world in addition to local examples of currency. Some of the exhibits date back to the turn of the 1800s and the collection include medals, medallions, coins and notes from many regions of the world.

Through novel interactive displays the museum aims to educate the visitor on the coins and notes of both pre- and post-independence Singapore, and chronicles the evolution of Singaporean currency.

The range of currency on display runs the gamut from the very earliest objects used for primitive bartering to the latest state of the art polymer notes. The museum also demonstrates the exceptional artistry and finesse of the Singapore Mint and the Monetary Authority of Singapore in producing currency, which has gained worldwide renown.

A special section displays the unusual manners in which notes and coins are used for ornamentation, weddings and other fascinating functions in various cultures.

The visitor may also obtain a first hand experience of coin making at the hands-on area, experimenting with silver, gold and other precious metals used for the purpose. As a souvenir visitors may make their own coin rubbings to take home.

Visitors of all ages will enjoy a visit to the Singapore Coins and Notes Museum with its attractive displays, friendly staff and hospitable ambience.
