Singapore, Top International Meeting City

Singapore has been ranked as the top destination for international meetings for the third consecutive year.

Singapore is the place to head to for convening prestigious meetings, exhibitions and conferences. Testimony to this fact are the results of the Union of International Associations(UIA) 2009 Gobal Rankings, which has named Singapore as the top city for international meetings amongst 1,653 cities worldwide. The city-state is said to have hosted an impressive figure of 689 meetings in 2009 including the Singapore International Water Week, Singapore International Energy Week, and APEC 2009 Summit, among others.

In recent years the MICE industry has gathered momentum and is increasingly being recognized as a major contributor to business tourism world-wide. The MICE industry has emerged as a highly competitive sector especially in Asia with Singapore, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Thailand vying with each other as the best destination for business executives. Hong Kong, which is Singapores keen competitor in the MICE space has embarked upon a HK$150million drive to promote its MICE sector. Thai authorities have announced plans to construct an international convention center in Phuket by 2012 to cater to ASEAN region events. However, despite these regional developments Singapore has undoubtedly evolved as a model MICE destination that other countries are now keen to emulate. For instance, the Chinese city of Tianjin is looking at tapping Singapores expertise in the MICE industry.

Singapore has left no stone unturned in attracting top-notch business events. State-of-the art infrastructure, endless venue options, unique leisure experiences, international service standards, and a clean and safe environment are some of the citys strengths that play a key role in attracting prestigious events year after year. Moreover, the opening of the two Integrated Resorts has elevated Singapores business tourism landscape to a whole new level. Four months into operation and Marina Bay Sands has already attracted 100,000 participants for over 150 events. The Sands Expo and Convention Center has also clinched 370 events that is expected to draw in over 345,000 participants. Resorts World Sentosa has over 400 events in the pipeline that are expected to run until 2011 and has attracted 100,000 delegates since it opened in February this year. Furthermore, older MICE venues such as Suntec Convention Centre and Singapore Expo continue to host an impressive number of events and business has remained unfazed despite the opening of the two IRs.

According to Ms. Catherine Lee, a senior editorial board member of the SingaporeSetup.com site, Singapores MICE sector has lucrative business potential. There are a number of service sectors that stand to benefit from this industry be it event management companies, travel agencies, transportation companies, restaurants, or hotels. Additionally, the Singapore Tourism Board has launched a number of initiatives to help defray event costs, encourage MICE event organizers to setup shop overseas and help international players to set up a regional presence in Singapore. Business opportunities abound for global entrepreneurs who can now leverage on the ease of Singapore company registration and setup a MICE related business venture.
