Singham Hindi Movie Review
When angry young man of Zanjeer meets brave heart Dabangg meets Gangajals honest
cop - what you get is Singham, another-larger- than-life hero, ready for some serious baddie bashing. Director Rohit Shettys Singham will roar for sure, but strictly for the masses!
USPs of this remake of Tamil Singam are going to be the heavy duty dialogues and over-the-top action sequences. However, dont get surprised with an all pervasive Dabangg effect in movie, be it in the way Devgn fights off ten goondas in one go, his shirtless stint or the title song shout of the striking similarities. [Hud Hud Dabangg and Singham]
An ode to the era of Amitabh Bachchan and Garam Dharam, Singham is the story of a macho and diligent cop Bajirao Singham [Ajay Devgn], who is hero-worshipped by his villagers and is pulled into the muck of corrupted Goa by a goon-turned-politico Jayant Shikre [Prakash Raj]. In Goa, he meets Rakesh Kadams widow Sonali Kulkarni. Rakesh, an honest police officer was forced to commit suicide due to false charges of curruption. How Singham manages to nip the evil and establish the rein of integrity amid a lot of twists and turns form the crux of his story. Singhams sincerity and vigour also gets him a lady love in Kavya [Kajal Aggarwal].
Talking about characters, Ajay Devgn has established himself once again as one of B-towns best action heroes and a seasoned actor. Though, a some more dialogues in first half could have made his character more memorable. Southern beauty, Kajal Aggarwal ends up being a showpiece and romance goes out of the window in this action flick. She needs a few more movies to prove herself. Prakash Rajs performance is too good as the bad man. In fact, it wont be an exaggeration to say that he outshines Ajay in a few scenes. Together they make a masaledar duo whose mean chemistry is better than the lead pair. Sudhanshu Pandey registers his presence despite a brief appearance. Sonali Kulkarni makes a comeback and fits the bill with her balanced acting. Sachin Khedekar, an otherwise seasoned actor has a lot to learn as far as comedy is concerned.
While first half of the Singham is quite slow, second half is way too fast and lacks coherence, but you can manage as its all so predictable. Ajays character arrives truly only in the second half, but hence forth he stays with you till the end. Screenplay lacks lucidity and Farhad-Shahid could have done a better job with the dialogues, particularly for Ajay. However, the dialogues are well distributed between the hero and the villain. Rohits love for comedy is evident as he not only squeezes a few comic punches in this otherwise action movie but also manages to make you giggle. However, being in the directors chair, Rohit has done a fairly decent job with those high-flying cars and fight sequences. However, we wish he could have brought some uniqueness in this remake, which disseminates heavy 'Tamil masala' vibe. Action director Jai Singh gets some claps in the auditorium and camera work is remarkable. Songs go unnoticed and music directors Ajay Gogavale and Atul Gogavale disappoint.
If you enjoy high-octane action without any adulteration and seetimar dialogues, Singham is for you. If you are looking out for a slick sophisticated movie, Singham is not for you. It's as simple as that. Decide for yourself, grab your tub of pop corn and there you go...lights, camera, action...after all its totally filmy!
