Singing Techniques - Some Tips For Your Recording Session

You've got some songs together and you're ready to go into a recording studio

. There are important things to consider before you put your money down. Here are a few points:

* If you can, shop around. Visit some studios in your area. Meet the people you will be working with: the producer, the engineer. As you spend a little time with them be very aware of how they make you feel. Are they comfortable to be around? Would you enjoy working with them. Are they knowledgeable and qualified?

* Make sure you choose a studio and producer that has experience in recording and mastering the type of music you do. If you sing country music and the producer is known for rock and roll, be careful.

* Listen to some of their recordings of other groups. Do you like what you hear?

* Understand that a lot of impressive equipment and a big long mixing board does not necessarily mean that this is a good studio. Some of the best recordings are done in small studios with talented and creative producers. The producer in the recording studio is much like the director of a movie. He-she is the guide, the co-creator with you, the person with new and exciting ideas to make your record better. The producer can come up with harmony ideas, and teach them to you.The good producer is patient and doesn't make you feel rushed.

Stay relaxed. Rotate your head and shake things out whenever you aren't singing. Remember to stay the same distance from the mic unless you pull back when singing loud or powerful notes. Be sure you are comfortable with your headphone mix. Don't let the producer tell you how loud your volume should be, or whether you can or can't have a little reverb in your monitor mix.

If you are the vocalist with a band, be aware that the amount of time you may be given to record your part may be limited because the other players take so much time fussing over their recording. Fight for the right to be heard.

If you don't work well with demanding, strict people, and your producer is this way, change studios or producers. You are the one paying for this.

* If this person makes you uncomfortable or nervous they are probably not right for you. You are the one paying the money. You must feel at ease, non threatened and in a place which is conducive to your best work. The best producers are good psychologists. They know how to read and understand what brings out your best.

* However, if you respect the producer's abilities you must be willing to listen and to try their ideas, even if they seem wrong to you at the time. Just because you are the singer or the songwriter doesn't mean that improvements can't come from someone else.
