The fable of single moms receiving funding from the federal government has left somewhat of a bad taste in the mouths of people that see this ad almost everywhere on the Internet. There are a few truths that you need to know if you are a single mother that truly does want to go back to college and finish your degree.

In order to find the best grant programs for your particular University and major that you are struggling with in college, you need to consider a variety of sources and not just one or two.

The first place you should go is to your high school or college financial aid counselor. In their office, they are attached to thousands of possible sources of income that you can receive in the form of grants that you do not have to repay. This income is tax-free and will allow you to complete college classes for two years or more without having to pay a single dime.

The trick is understanding how to fill out the paperwork in order to represent yourself as a hardship case. It may be that you are working a part-time job in trying to make ends meet. If this is the case, you obviously qualified for most of the programs available.

If you are working a full-time job and have a sizable mortgage and a large family, and you are contributing the only source of income, you also more than likely qualify for tens of thousands of dollars that is available from federal programs.

If you would like to branch out beyond the federally funded arena, you should look at state level programs. Many colleges offer scholarships that are given out to students that are in financial duress. By inquiring on your campus website for financial aid options, you're likely to find grants that are given out each and every year by the college of your choice.

Most moms are concerned primarily about whether or not they can feed their family. They will not deviate any extra money into classes or books that they need and therefore need to find this extra source of income. When they are all done with college, this will no longer be an issue, but that is why funding needs to be addressed now.

To find the best options that are available for you and your situation as you pursue your college degree, the best way to do it is to find students that are currently majoring in the same subjects that you are and ask them how they are paying for school. By interviewing enough of them, you will create a sizable list of possible sources of money, especially single moms grant programs that are available today.
