Sinus Irrigation A Good Alternative Against Sinusitis
Sinus irrigation is the process of flushing out clogged mucus and debris from the sinus cavities
. This works very effectively for patients of chronic sinusitis, allergic rhinitis, common colds and even asthma.
This technique requires the use of saline solution, about 250 to 500 ml, and a device that can control the flow of the solution inside the nasal passages and eventually the sinuses. By tradition, a neti pot is used. This pot resembles a small teapot with an extended, slimmer sprout. Newer versions of this pot are now available in drugstores in the form of bulb syringe, plastic pots, and even battery-powered irrigators. Most of these claim to be more efficient in fending off nasal blockage than traditional neti pots.
Newer methods such as sinus irrigators and pulsatile irrigators pump the saline solution into the nostril in controlled amounts. Unlike the traditional method, this pumping action is medically proven to simulate the sweeping action of the cilia, only this time the action is powerful enough to force the thickened mucous and microbes to loosen up and drain via the nostril or the throat.
For the most parts, this technique is effective in clearing out anything that blocks the nasal passages and the paranasal sinuses. It can be used as a stand-alone treatment or as an adjunctive treatment for post-surgery patients. It can also be used in combination with antibiotics. For this purpose, a medicated solution may be used in place of the standard saline solution. This may contain a dose of antibiotics or other medications that are delivered straight to the inflamed tissues of the sinuses for faster relief.
What is so remarkable about sinus irrigation is that it restores the health to the microscopic sweepers lining the mucosal tissue of the sinuses. These sweepers or cilia promote drainage and movement of fluids and other materials inside the sinuses. For patients of sinusitis and other upper respiratory system diseases, these cilia are impaired because of the inflammation affecting the delicate membranes lining the nasal passages and the sinuses. This inflammation causes further problems for sufferers of sinusitis and other related conditions as it forces the passages inside the nose to constrict, and eventually limiting the amount of space available for draining the materials inside. Sinus irrigation resolves this problem by first clearing out the unwanted elements in the nose and reducing the inflammation of the nasal membranes.
Tips for Using Sinus Irrigation
Ordinary saline solution alone is enough to force the gunk out of the sinuses. However, if you are suffering from a severe case of sinusitis, it may be good to add antibiotics, antihistamine or antifungal medications into the mixture to maximize the effect. Use this only if your doctor advises it. Otherwise, stick with the standard solution.
Also, refrain from using medicated solutions if you dont see any improvement with your sinusitis symptoms after continuous use or if you feel that the solution irritates your sinus and nasal membranes further.
Always open your mouth when irrigating your nose. You dont want the infectious materials to drain down your throat, your ears or your windpipe.
Do not increase the amount of salt in the mixture. The salinity level of the original solution mimics that of the nose and the tears.
