Sinus Problems And Information

Sinusitis and related sinus problems are a real health problem for many people.

When you have Sinus problems you often realise that you might have sinusitis when you have been suffering with what you thought was a common cold for far too long.

You wake up with a very sore head and your nose and surrounding areas feels clogged up.

One is unable to blow one's nose properly and when you do you still feel blocked up and there is some pressure perhaps on your fore head and on either side of your nose.

Sooner or later you will have to ask your self the key question to see if this is merely a common cold that you are suffering from or is it a sinusitis?

How then can one one tell the difference?

Firstly it helps to have some idea where the sinuses are in the human body?

The sinuses are simply defined as the air-filled spaces that are within the bones and skull of the face all of which are connected by air ways to the nose.

Sinusitis is an inflammation of those air spaces that are on each side of the nose.

Sinusitis can be caused by a variety of many problems which can include bacteria, viruses, fungi (molds) and even allergies.

It has been estimated that about one in five of the average population can suffer from chronic sinusitis.

When most people first experience sinusitis they will very often dismiss it as a common cold or even confuse it with some other medical problems since it does carry with it a very large variety of symptoms.

It can be very confusing as many of these symptoms are those that are very oftn associated with the common cold.

A lot of sinus sufferers complain of the classic stuffiness, pressure around the nose, a runny nose, colored or clear mucus, a cough, a sore or irritated throat, pain in the teeth, headache, or fever.

If all or any of the foregoing were not bad enough there can often be additional symptoms.

These can be a feeling of pressure in the ears, hoarseness of the voice and a reduced sense of smell.

It can be possible to have a few or all of these symptoms simply because they do vary considerably not only person to person but also infection to infection.

It can happen that the same individual could have a sinus infection more then once but each time with different symptoms.

Some sufferers complain of not just pressure that is on each side of the nose but also pressure that is in the forehead and behind the eyes as well.

These symptoms can be much worse at night. The reason for this is simply that in the working day the sufferer is active, so that the the mucus filled spaces have a chance to drain away due to gravity. However at night when sleeping the sufferer's head is now resting comfortably on a pillow. In that position the mucus is no longer able to drain away. This is what causes the sufferer to awake with that blocked up feeling and with more pressure then usual.

The biggest difference is that a sinus infection may need to be treated with antibiotics, and prescription nasal sprays, as well as decongestants and some times medication which will thin the mucus.

Some times it can help the sufferer to use a vaporizer in the eveniing, and occasionally nasal irrigation, as well as Aspirin.

It is essential to treat a sinus infection as soon as is practically possible. Certainly on no ccount should you wait any longer than two to three weeks after the initial symptoms or it could become much worse.

The most important course of action that any sinus sufferer should do is to have a good understanding and a detailed knowledge of their symptoms.

I am sure we have all heard it said that people and in particular men do not wish to go and see a doctor if it is "just a mere common cold".

However remember that what you think might be is just a cold might not actually be something more serious.

As I have mentioned above, a cold may not just be a mere common cold and the only way that you can be certain is if you have it diagnosed properly.
