However, if you are building a house in a very rainy and damp climate you might be wondering how SIPs will stand up to the moisture. It rains a lot on the UK, so will the house be able to take a large amount of water and still keep its inhabitants dry? How will excessive rain affect the structure over a long period of time? These are things that you will need to think about before building a home in a damp and rainy climate, as that home will need to protect you from the elements for a number of years.

Airtight Panels

When you build a SIPs house, the panels will create an absolutely perfect sealed and airtight structure. Not only does it make heating and cooling your house more efficient, it will also stop any moisture leaks from coming into the home. The panels are especially airtight in common areas of leakage such as windows, roof lights, and joints.

The SIPS panels also eliminate thermal bridging, which is when cold and damp from the outside transfers into internal walls and causes cold spots. SIPS panels prevent that because they have an insulated core which protects against this.

Proper Seals Help Protect Against Moisture

In order to maximize the potential of SIPS to protect your home against moisture they need to be properly constructed and sealed. If they are not properly sealed, the warm moist air inside the house can escape into the roof cavity and become trapped, where it will come into contact with the cold from the outside and condense.

This condensation will lead to mould and mildew growth and rot, so it is very important that this issue be avoided. Your SIPs need to be properly sealed in the interior joints between the wall and the roof, as well as the seams between each of the roof panels. This will drastically reduce the risk of moisture collection.

The common adhesive used in putting together SIPs is water-resistant, creating a strong and stable barrier against the rain. You do not always need a vapour barrier when building with SIPs, but it is a good idea to install a conventional polythene vapour barrier or foil backed boards.
