Six Habits of Tigers We Don't Know
Its silence, its powerful flowing stride, cold-eyed stare, its very presence stops the jungle in its track. The tiger's behavior continue to surprise us on occasion proving that one should never take this awesome predator for granted and that they are highly individualistic.
Some of their characteristics are elaborately pen downed below:
-- A tiger full-throated, hissing snarl accompanied with the flattening of the ears is terrifying to witness, but tigers seldom attack anything outright. Thus, a tiger could make a mock charge, with growls and snarls and terrifying leaps and bounds. He will then freeze for a few seconds, growling deep in his throat, assessing the situation, and once he is sure there is no threat, he will relax. Jim Corbett was absolutely right when he titled tigers a 'large-hearted gentleman'. Tigers make several sounds, ranging from low grunts to a puffing noise made by expelling air through the nostrils used to express friendliness and a meow which is similar to that of a domestic cat.
-- Tigers hunt mostly in a late evening, and alone, stalking silently to within a few yards of their prey, then with a sudden powerful rush bringing it down, either breaking its neck with a combination of strength and the impact of fall, or chocking it to death. Among wild pigs, spotted deer and sambar, sambars are commonly killed. Tigers even eat crabs. They are also a threat to bulls, rhinos and elephant calves. Porcupines are tiger's last attack because of their strong quills. Many of the man-eaters are found to be disabled by porcupine quills in their paws, chest and forelegs, a major factor in their turning to easy prey like man.
-- Very few people have seen tigers mating in the wild, far less captured it on film. Tigers are as elusive as the wind in a forest-with their perfect camouflage they melt into their surroundings, not a sound or rustle giving away their movements. And on two occasions in their lives they retreat deep into undisturbed, heavy forest cover where they can be alone-mating and parturition. It often happened in a way:
The full-throated sound of a tiger, twice or thrice in quick succession. The tiger then stops calling. The tiger and the tigress sniff each other's faces and rub their neck together. The tigress rolls over playfully, then get up and nuzzles the tiger who appeared disinterested. His belly looks extremely full. However, the tigress manage to get the reaction from him by alternately nuzzling him and rolling over, spending quiet sometime on her back with paws in the air looking very appealing. He sniffs her scent and lolls his tongue out. After 15 minutes of this interaction the male walks off. The tigress watches him, get up and follow him lying beside a dry stream-bed, looking very relaxed. After several minutes of inaction, the tigress nuzzles the male again and walks off. She looks back from across the stream and come back, setting down away from the male and licks her paws, while he ignores her. She gets up and walks determinedly to the male. They nuzzle briefly, with a low rumble and she walks past him and sat down. He comes and mounts her, gripping her neck gently in open jaws, growls softly. After few seconds he bit her neck and snarls. The tiger then leaps off and fled across the stream bed with his tail in the air, disappearing among the trees. The tigress looks after him from her still-sitting position, then she too gets up and follows him.
-- Tigers have a gestation period of approximately 100 days. Their life span is close to 20 years in good conditions. The tigress delivers her cubs, away from the tiger, in a cave or leafy grotto offering heavy cover with water nearby. Litter of three -four cubs occur. Quite often, the weaker sibling does not survive.
The mother must be very vigilant at a time like this, for cubs are very vulnerable to hyenas, other tigers and leopards. She carries them around by lifting them in her jaws, gripping the loose skin around the neck and shoulders, and will make sure they are in a safe place while she is hunting.
-- Tigers work hard for their meals. The carcass is usually dragged for a short distance to a secluded spot, and the tiger commences feeding from the rump, pulling out the entrails which are normally not eaten. The mother will either go with the cubs for the feed or take the kill to them. Tigers are immensely powerful, and male can lift a large sambar or buffalo clear off the ground simply with their neck muscles. A single blow from a forepaw is often enough to kill a small ungulate, and definitely enough to break a man's neck.
-- A tiger will remain in the vicinity of a kill or within a few minutes walk while there is anything left to eat. A big male will finish a sambar stag over three or four days, ingesting up to 20k of meat everyday. After a meal like this, he will be ready for another kill after two or three days. However, tigers seem to be able to periods of regular eating and deprivation, sometimes existing for several days without a meal with no visible ill effects. A tiger's kill is vulnerable to scavengers like vultures, hyenas and jackals. Pigs, other tigers and an occasional leopard will also eat off it, mostly when they are sure the tiger is not around. Of all the large cats, tigers are the least averse to water; indeed they often soak themselves in pools at the height of the summer heat. Tigress, use her tail to flick water on her hind quarters and back. It is very difficult to locate and see a tiger in the monsoon; the undergrowth is high and tigers movement wide-ranging.
Tigers are omnipotent, king of jungle but they are destined up to nothing but a saga.
