Six Helps For Moving Overseas

There is much preparation and organization required when moving abroad

. There are so many things to do and it can become stressful. A notebook can help you remember important details such as phone numbers, dates, contact people and things that need to yet be done.

1) Have a budget. Before you really begin the moving process, sit down and figure out much it's going to cost to move. You will need money for insurance, moving costs, airline tickets, food and lodging when you first arrive and extra money for unexpected expenses.

2) Research your new country. Take the time to learn as much as possible about the country to which you are moving. What are there customs, history, dress, and protocol? How do they feel about foreigners and what do they eat? Where can you go to make friends and what public transportation is available? These are just a few of the questions that will be helpful to know before you arrive.

3) Learn the language. If your new country speaks a different language, you have a lot of work to do! The more you learn the language, the easier it will be for you to fit into your new home. Local colleges, online resources and the library should have information to help you learn the new language. If you can find a friend with whom you can converse, you will learn the language that much faster!

4) Get help. There are many things that must be done. You shouldn't have to do this all by yourself. You need to get some help from friends and family. Physical help is often needed when we move - moving things, packing, and running errands. Other times, we need emotional help - Someone to help us make decisions, listen when we are frustrated and give us advice. Be brave and ask for help. Moving abroad is a huge endeavor and no one should feel alone while doing it.

5) Deal with the important things first. Your health is the most important thing. Schedule a physical exam with your regular doctor and tell him your plans to move so he can give you the proper advice. Also, your dental and eye care need to be addressed before you leave. It will much easier to enter your new country when you know that your health needs have been addressed.

6) Throw things away. The junk in your life needs to go. Starting with one room at a time, begin to separate items. Some items will need to be thrown away, while others can be boxed for moving. There will also be many items that you don't want to take with you, but you know it would be wasteful to throw it away. Perhaps a friend or local charity can take these items off of your hands. Another idea is to have a yard sale or sell items on eBay. Regardless of how you plan to do it, begin as soon as possible so that this job won't seem so daunting.

Sure, moving is a big deal. It's an even bigger deal to move overseas. However, if you get a plan together and stick with it, you will find it very doable. Gather your resources and you will eventually see things coming together. All of this hard work and preparation will pay off when you finally get moved to your new country!
