What was encouraging about the past weekend's international fixtures was the improved performances of the Northern Hemisphere sides against their Southern Hemisphere opponents.England and Scotland in particular gave impressive performances against Australia and Argentina respectively. Even Italy staked a claim for Northern Hemisphere rugby with a much improved performance against the Springboks in Witbank. This is especially meaningful as Italy have not really been able to shed its Cinderella status since joining the Six Nations Championship they have been the wooden spoonists since joining the competition years back. These are important developments ahead of the Rugby World Cup scheduled for New Zealand in 2011. Add to that the performance of Wales, which though being thumped by a Daniel Carter-inspired All Black side, was way, way better than their recent performance against the Springboks. Despite the improvement, they still lost by a huge margin this mainly due to fantastic individual performances from Carter and Joe Rokocoko. The Welsh completely dominated the first half with excellent phase play and controlled tactical moves and it was only disciplined and resolute defense from the New Zealanders that prevented them from scoring.

It is true that the Wales team was competitive in most aspects, but what worries me is that our pattern of play doesn't create chances. For the dominance that Wales enjoyed in the first half, the only try scored was by an interception. During the Six Nations, Shaun Edwards dismissed such a score a non try' when England and France intercepted Wales. Wales' game-plan has not altered in three seasons. It's the age-old kicking game, the age-old phase play and the age-old defense. Teams know exactly what Wales are going to do and are waiting for it to happen. The only times that Wales look dangerous are when Shane Williams, James Hook or Martyn Williams do something exceptional.

Scotland's series winning Test victory over Argentina in Mar del Plata, and Italy's brave losing effort against world champions South Africa,was further good newsfor northern hemisphere rugbyat the weekend. Scotland have now won their last three matches - all away - as the two wins over the Pumas followed their impressivevictory over Ireland in Dublin on the final day of the six Nations. Andy Robinsonhas developeda terrific spirit within a Scotland squadthat is brimming with talent, butwho would have thought this time last year that they would go on to defeat Australia and Ireland and then win a series in Argentina?Certainly not OT.

ENGLAND manager Martin Johnson insists he has never entertained the thought of stepping down, after celebrating the finest win of his tenure. Saturday's hard-fought 21-20 victory over Australia in Sydney was Johnson's first against Tri-Nations opposition in his two years in charge. It came amid fresh criticism of the former England captain, following disappointing results in the autumn and then the Six Nations. But Johnson said: "I never came close to thinking about packing it in. Not seriously. Never. When you're being criticised you just get on with it and get through it. "You judge yourself and I'm my harshest critic. My coaches will tell me if I'm doing things wrong and that's the way it should work." The winning points came from the boot of substitute Jonny Wilkinson, just as they did when Johnson skippered the side to World Cup glory on the same pitch in 2003. The manager has already set his sights firmly on challenging for the trophy next year in New Zealand, in what will be his first World Cup in a coaching capacity.

And he has high hopes for Leicester scrum-half Tom Youngs, who scored a try on his Test debut at the weekend and now looks a strong candidate to pip Danny Care to the No9 shirt at the tournament.
