Six Simple Ways to Improve Time Management
Six Simple Ways to Improve Time Management
Do you think that the only way to accomplish all that you need to do is to extend the number of hours in a day? Do you experience disruptions that no matter how much scheduling you do, something will always get in the way, delaying your plan completion?
Do you have people in mind that you pray you could meet and have a cup of coffee and yet, you could not even find the time to call or send a message? Do you have a compilation of items you wanted to do, try and even take a look but never had the time and can't be sure if that time will ever come? Do you have places in thoughts you desire to visit for a vacation but planning for one is not a possibility at all?
If you answer "YES" to any of the above or simply find yourself nodding or winking an eye for each and every question, continue reading. Whether you live a life of deception and lies that being busy and slave to work is the way to go or you simply is addictive to tiring yourself down to your very nerve, believe me that you can carve out few minutes or even better, additional hours for everything you have been missing out.
It's all about improving your time management skills, and contrary to what you may think, it is not hard. I am a certified workaholic person and rest to me is the greatest sin I can commit in the corporate world ... well, that was before when I am yet to accept the new Lordship of Jesus in my life. Let me share with you some simple ways that truly helped me stop wrestling with time.
1. Start the Day Right.
God is bigger than anything and everything is possible with Him. He can smoothen our day, calm all forms of storm, keep us grounded and perfectly safe, only if we seek his will as the new day greeted us. Often times, we hurried off from bed as soon as our eyes opened, go on the rush and keep ourselves busy enough after the usual bathroom routine. We are like soldiers going to the battle without reporting first to the Commander-in-Chief to seek instruction and confirm order of duty. We stress ourselves immediately and filled our mind with handful of concerns even before we can smell the freshness of the morning.
"For I know the plans I have for you, 'declares the LORD,' plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11).
Start the day with an intimate moment with our creator who has long prepared the perfect plan for each one of us. Appreciate the grace of a new day, take time to praise and give thanks to the Holy One who made it possible for us to see a brand new start. Allow his love and compassion to inspire you and bring new meaning to your daily task. Cast upon him your concerns, apprehensions, worries and doubts that blind you from seeing his will for you. Have a quiet time with the Lord each morning, feel his presence, hear his voice and have a wonderful day ahead. It may not be a hassle-free day but surely, it will be a hassle-proof one. You may encounter delays in plan, disruptions in schedule or complete revisions of everything set before hand, but trusting everything to the Lord at the beginning of each day give assurance that he always bring out the good in every situation.
2. Set Priorities.
"Everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way" (1 Corinthians 14:40). Our God is a God of order; our creation is neither by accident nor in random order so why should our life be? Setting "correct" priorities is a must in time management. Our material world is set up in such a way that we cannot run out of things to do. We are bombarded with so many stuff, much of which are truly unnecessary to live fully and yet, we feel compelled to do. We have our families who have set of expectations from us that need to be fulfilled. There are authorities in our lives that we need to submit in compliance. We have work, businesses and activities that squeeze out our energy and yet don't seem to be done right all the time. Needless to say, we have our personal needs too that requires attention. The list can simply go on and on and without setting our top priority, no order can be truly established and efficient time management will be impossible.
"Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:33).
We've been doing things our way and sinning becomes a way of life. Our disobedience lead us astray to a condition of disorder that no matter how hard we try, we simply keep failing and our schedule remained at mess. The truth is we cannot put order in our life alone and without help. We need the Holy Spirit to enlighten us to the right order of things, to put us back in alignment with God's perfect will and plan for us. God command us to love him with all our heart, mind and soul. He also commands us to love our neighbor as we love ourselves. Our "To Do List" must only include things in obedience to God's word. On top of our priority must be the things in adherence to these two great commandments. Fill your schedule only with things pleasing to God. Free yourself of any errands leading to sin. Let go of thoughts that bring unwanted feelings towards others. Forego any plans that will create dispute. Sacrifice fleshly desires. Keep your focus on only godly things and you will be amazed at how much time you have for things that renew your physical strength, bring joy to your life and nurture your spiritual growth.
3. Observe Sabbath Day.
We are created in the image and likeness of God and we are called to live in a Christ-like manner. If God himself rested on the seventh day after completing six days of creation, who are we to deny rest to our body, the very temple of His Holy Spirit. We live in an age where physical abuse is a household byword. We are witness to marital abuse ... child abuse ... in physical, verbal, sexual and mental forms. We detest it, we express strong disagreement and at some point, we go out our way to offer help and assistance. Indeed, it is easy to measure someone who is hurting the people we care about. Their acts cannot go unnoticed and without judgment. Rarely, however, do we look inside us and realize how much we too abuse our very own body. We submit freely to be slave to work. We allow our body to labor severely and endure much physical pain. We exploit our God-given gifts and abilities.
"Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord, your God has commanded you" (Deuteronomy 5:12).
Sabbath day is a day dedicated for re-connection of our soul to its source of power. It is a day for our physical body to rest and renew its strength. It is a day for us to meditate on our failures and rejoice on our accomplishments. It is our reporting day to the King, a day to account the fruits from six days of work. It is our day of taking order from Lord of our life, a day to receive divine ways to fulfill His will and complete His plan. God desire us to live in balance and to take care of our body in partnership with Him. Remember that God command us to be good steward over everything He created and that is including our body, where the Holy Spirit dwell in us. Respect the day specially made for the Lord. Cooperate with Him as He provides healing and restoration to your earthly body. A weary spirit and weak body assures defeat. Allow a day of recovery and your victory over the next lapse of your journey is guaranteed.
4. Control your Mind.
We suffer more from mental exhaustion than physical fatigue. Without necessity for sweating, we tire ourselves enough by allowing our mind to wonder and wander. When presented with less data, we speculate and assume and when much is presented, we doubt and question. It is as if the natural thing to do with everything and anything that passes on us. How we love keeping our mind occupied! As wondering still isn't enough, we are lured with mind wandering. We enjoy being physically present in one place and being mentally active in many situations. Some call it day dreaming, others wishful thinking, pass time ... regardless of how you define it, wandering mind is one without peace.
"You will keep in perfect peace whose mind is steadfast, because he trusts in you" (Isaiah 26:3).
Choose your thoughts carefully. Accept and process only thoughts that restore life and bring freshness in everything. Reject thoughts of unrighteousness leading to loss of love, joy, trust and peace in your life. Control your mind and what comes to it. Be on the lookout on what you accept into your mind. God wants us to live in clarity and knowledge not in confusion and doubts. Allowing evil thoughts into our mind is surrendering the peace that transcends all understanding. Only in peaceful state can our mind be focused and aligned with our purpose in life. Discard all rubbish thoughts. Free yourself from trivial matters and junk itineraries. Walk in the light and truth of God's word. Bring every thought captive and surrender it to the Lord. Pray to "have the mind of Christ" (1 Corinthians 2:16). Claim a sound mind dedicated only to what is true, just, noble, lovely and godly and surely you will have enough time to accomplish only what is pleasing and acceptable to God.
5. Fellowship with Spiritual Family.
I am too tired! I am all alone in this! Nobody help me! Nobody understands! Nobody cares! Nobody listens! These are just few of the common battle cry of people desperately seeking for sense of belongingness and acceptance. Oh! Come on, it's just an expression when you're a bit stress and harass. You know some kind of bywords to release sort of tensions and all. It's nothing serious and just letting the bad mood pass by. I am not really sure what shoes are you into but I believe that such declarations have deeper meaning whether the person in utterance accept it or not. Often times, we figure out that our schedule is fully blocked off with so many things simply because we feel that no one is there to share the load physically, emotionally and mentally. We are deprive of good relationships that bring joy in our daily routines, thus, even a simple errand could become a difficult task to complete. Ultimately, the load pile up and we charge it to lack of time!
"Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?" (2 Corinthians 6:14).
Our relationship with our spiritual family is of great importance. It is through fellowship with believers that our hunger for affirmations and appreciation is fulfilled. Establishing relationship with people who walk in the light allow us to see the truth about ourselves. Building friendship with God's family bring healing and restoration in our relational injuries. Church relationship is not one without difficulty but its ability to walk through the problem determines the quality of association that helps us walk in the right direction. Seek for godly affiliations, one that will provide you a balance and healthy outlook in life. Bond with your spiritual community that "all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice" (Ephesians 4:31). Let no iniquity consume your time. Grow in spirit and nurture opportunities to walk in accountability with fellow believers.
6. End the Day Right.
How do you break from the day's work? When do you call it day? What do you do to switch off from the day's tasks? Some people get to the habit of unwinding after office hours. Bars, clubs, casinos and alike are familiar places to consider every end of day. And far from slowing down, this brings new set of activities and kick off what is commonly known as "night life." So we have day life and night life equally filled with tangles and loops ... then we complain how physically drained we are.
"You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised" (Hebrews 10:36)
Let us not fall short of perseverance that we give in to fleshly desires at the end of the day. Do not be deceived and accept sinful lies established by evil spirit. Our Father who sees our labor shall reward us and bless us with the fulfillment of his promise. End your day calmly and lovingly. Allow your b
