Skiing Big And Small Resorts In Colorado

As of the 2012-2013 season, there are 26 open ski hills

. Everything from the 80 acre Hesperus to the ginormous Vail that is nearly twice as big as the second biggest resort in the start. Choosing to ski a big resort or a small hill both have advantages and disadvantages, but often people don't consider them on a particular day or with a particular group. And choosing right can make all the difference.

Skiing Alone

Imagine that you live in Denver and you are going to ski on a Tuesday in January by yourself. The gods have dumped snow the night before on every hill in the state. The hills will be midweek empty. Where do you go? The importance of this exercise is to define for yourself what it is that you truly like about skiing. If you aren't following the snow or competing with road traffic or hill traffic, what would you fancy? This is your baseline ski love. Remember it. You will be making adjustments based your particular context, but it's important for you to know what you like about skiing. Saying, "no crowds" is not a ski condition and neither is "less traffic". These are environmental, and while they affect your mood, they do not count.

Fitness

When we were young and took only one ski trip per year for three days at a time, you had to ski every second the lifts were open. You were there as soon as they started up and you tried to get to the top of the mountain as they were shutting them down. The idea was to rest on the lifts. If you are not in great shape, resting on the lifts might not be enough. So if you or your group is not in great shape, it might be helpful to hit the popular resorts. There will be plenty of lift lines that will help you to catch your breath between runs.

Skill

Some hills not only offer more difficult terrain than others, but they also sometimes make it difficult to ski around the hard terrain. Take A Basin for example. This is mostly difficult terrain. There are rarely big crowds because of this, and the tickets are cheaper, but if you have too many beginners, they will not have much to ski.

Enthusiasm

Sometimes ski groups are comprised of people who are willing to try skiing, but aren't that crazy about it. It can be difficult to predict their boredom thresholds and the temptation to shop, eat, and drink. If this sounds like your group, head to one of the big resorts. The better skiers can find their little niches, and those who aren't as enthusiastic can always take a break and do tons of other stuff.

What about Small Hills?

It might sound like my answer to every potential problem is to just go to a big mountain. Often this is the case. Big mountains pretty much have everything covered, so they are able to answer a lot of the common ski quandaries. But to me, small hills are about love of skiing, meaning being on a pair of skis. Some people claim to love skiing, but really they only love to do each run once and then they are bored. True skiers can do the same run over and over, and never tire of it. They can always find something new and fresh about the next run. So if you have true skiers in your group, find a small hill, pay a little less, and ski every snowflake.
