Skype will begin adding ads into its Windows platform

Skype said Monday that it will begin adding ads into its Windows platform, together with a promise that they "won't interrupt your Skype experience".

Slype said that the ads will appear in the Home tabs within the U.S., U.K, and German versions of Skype, and would include ads from Groupn, Universal Pictures, and Visa, among others. The ads will begin appearing this week.

"The Skype experience is our first priority, which is why we we've taken a lot of time working through and testing what kind of advertising would work best in the Skype environment," the company said in ablog post. "In fact, some of you may have seen some test ads from our friends at Rdio in the last month or two. As we roll out ads on a wider basis, we expect to continue to test and learn a lot more, and make any necessary adjustments along the way."

Skype also is againreportedly proposing a partnership with Facebook to embed Skype on that platform, so that users can connect with other users via Skype voice chat, in addition to writing messages to their friends.

Skype also pledged that users "may only see ads occasionally," the company said. "Our initial plan is to show an ad from one brand per day in each of the markets where advertising is being sold."

Skype said that the ads won't identify the user specifically, but the company may use the user's location, gender andf age to tailor ads. If the user does not wnat Skype to use this information, the user can opt out using the Privacy tab under "Tools>Options".

Since itsdeclaration to go public last year, Skype has been working on ways to expand its user base withlow-bandwidth and optimizeddirect-dial options to allow the technology to be used in areas without widespread PC coverage. Skype alsoenhaced its iPhone app andbought Qik to improve its video-calling capabilities. That, of course, won't be used in China, which hasdeclared Skype to be illegal.

"The Skype experience is paramount and we are committed to learning as we go, continuing to evolve the offer for advertisers and to developing great products that enable you to connect whenever you're apart," Skype said.
