Short term sleep disorders may usually pertain to environmental factors like stress and tension, consumption of alcohol. But long term sleep disorder which lasts for several days or months may be due to chronic stress, medical or physical problems. External factors like diseases may also disrupt a persons sleep at night. Sleep disorders may also be attributed to aging. It is very common in people who have crossed their 60s to experience sleep problems although it cannot be judged to be a normal part of aging or due to medications consumed by people at that age. Sleep disorder treatments have come up to assist the people experiencing these problems and to relieve them of it. The first steps involved treatment of sleep disorders is diagnosis of the problem or to know what is causing sleeplessness and assessing the magnitude of the problem. The next step is to improve the sleep disorder by following a good sleep pattern over a period of time and getting habituated to it, if the problem persists, then necessary medication is provided. Other types of treatment of getting rid of sleep problems is to include exercise in your schedule and avoiding caffeine, practicing relaxation exercises before and after sleeping. CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy is very potent for overcoming short term sleep problems. Hypnotic medications may also be helpful for overcoming these short term sleep disorders. Large meals and substances that exaggerate sleeplessness should be avoided before bedtime. High intensity workout during the day may also help in inducing good sleep at night.
