We've all had nights where we couldn't sleep well

. Maybe it was too much coffee or you were just a little stressed. There was probably a time when there was noise outside that kept you awake. Have you ever not slept because of a ringing of the ears?

I was a musician and played in bands for years. I was exposed t loud guitar amps but the worst for me was the cymbals from the drum kit. I play bass and usually stood next to the drummer and the crashing cymbals took their toll.

It started as a ringing of the ears after playing music and sometimes continued into the next day before it went away. Then it didn't go away. The first effect for me was noticing the ringing at night when I was trying to sleep. The ringing stood out clearly when there was silence.

I visited the doctor and came away with a prescription drug called betahistidine. It helped but was only a temporary cure. It had the nasty side effect of making me nauseated.


Tranquilizers came next and they seemed to make the ringing even worse. My doctor started talking about the possibility of surgery. My search for a natural treatment for tinnitus was on.

I found that techniques like biofeedback,meditation and stretching exercises such as yoga helped me. Anything that increased circulation seemed to lessen the roaring I heard daily.

The next change was in my lifestyle and diet. No more drinking or late hours along with less salt on my food. Salt has been shown to allow a buildup of fluid in the ears. Drugs such as nicotine and caffeine make the blood vessels smaller and this doesn't help circulation.

Certain herbs have been found to alleviate the suffering of tinnitus. Ginkgo biloba has no known side effects and helps the circulation in the head. Researchers in Germany discovered that taking 160 mg. of ginkgo daily helped significantly.

Opening up your blood vessels seems to be key in treating tinnitus and niacin is great for this. It increases the amount of oxygen and nutrients that are delivered to the brain and the inner ear. Zinc has also helped many tinnitus patients. Researchers found that 50mg a day helped many people with ringing of the ears to find quiet for the first time, especially at night when the ringing can seem to be at its worst.
