Sleeping For The Elderly Is Difficult

I work with three women over 70

I work with three women over 70. They are generally healthy women, but because they work full time they don't get much opportunity to exercise. They also don't have the best eating habits but I am not sure how much that plays into things, all three commonly comment about how little sleep they get at night, ranging from 4 to 6 hours. They have a terrible time falling asleep and then often wake fully in the night being unable to fall back to sleep again.

There are many studies out on sleep and how important it is to being productive and efficient during the day and how it contributes to our overall well being. There are a number of tricks that people can try when getting to sleep that might come in handy. I have struggled off and on with insomnia for years but when I exercise regularly and eat well, it helps tremendously. Active lives contribute to rest. Another trick is to have a bedtime routine, a bath, reading, anything that help you to unwind and forget the cares and worries of the day. If my husband puts on an old sitcom he can be asleep in five minutes. I like to read to unwind at the end of the day. It takes my mind of whatever is pressing and allows me to relax. I have also found that counting is the fastest way for me to get to sleep. I count slowly and breath between numbers. The secret is to bore yourself to sleep and counting does just that. If I can stay focused on the numbers and not let my mind wander, I rarely get to 200 before I am asleep.

The comfortably of your bed could also contribute to a good nights sleep, especially with the elderly who often have back or neck pain. There are a number of mattresses out there that aid in sleep. An adjustable bed could be just the ticket for relaxation and then finding the perfect sleeping position. They are also split so each person can find their own level of comfort.

Whether old or young we all suffer occasionally from sleep deprivation, try counting, exercising, eating well and having the right mattress to help you get those golden hours of sleep we need each night!
